Nice, you spend the evening listening to the booze...

It's often said that the best HiFi upgrade you can buy for £50 is some new vinyl and a decent bottle of wine :)

• #2481
Absolutely true

That was exactly my evening after all this hifi chat yesterday- bottle of wine listening to records, then some drunk vinyl shopping/eBay scouring.

Cheers @Olly398 @FatManOnAFixie @BRM
@Apone Yeah, bought the amps and cabinet together a few years back.
Probably home made in the 70's. -

Going to drag this thread back from the dead.
I've been collecting records / vinyls for some time now. Mainly because I like the artwork on them and the history. I figure I might as well play them now.
I've got a Yamaha revciever that is 5.1, so I'm looking for a entry level record player that can plug into my system. Doing some research I know it will need a built in pre amp but I'd like some opinions on what to get.Preferably black and one that does not come in a carry case.
Cheers

you've been collecting and not playing them?
preferably black? -

Hifi wonks might not approve, but something like this Sony could be all you need for your existing system, especially if you don't have many records.
Rega's RP1 is probably where entry-level turntables with serious hifi aspirations really begin, though you'll need a phono stage for it.
-
• #2490
It's probably worth stretching to the Performance Pack RP1.
-
• #2491
What's the best way to test a phono input without a turntable?
-
• #2492
I had seen the regas before and it does look seriously nice! Would suit my other equipment. I've seen them for about £250 unless you guys have seen it cheaper.
I have around 50 records now. So I have enough to play. I like the sound of one with a built in preamp though as it's just easy and the Sony one has one. -
• #2493
Dont get the sony, its gross and plasticky. Treat your self to the Rega, you'll only regret it if you dont and end up buying one at a later date.

Perfect 5/7.
Le rep.

Agreed.
I think I mentioned it before, but I got my choice down to either the RP1 or a Project - I managed to find an ex-demonstrator Project Debut Carbon (with the Ortofon 2m Red cartridge) for under £200 which sealed the deal so if you shop around you might find something.
If you can't stretch to either of those, the Project Essential is still good enough and can be upgraded quite a bit in time.

I'm pulling trigger on a Rega RP1 and Cambridge Audio AM1. Anyone recommend speakers. Sub £150?
-
• #2497
Sub £150 would probably have to be second hand. Not that it matters if they've been looked after. What size room. How close are you sitting to them. What kind of music are you listening to.
-
• #2498
Was mixing on a pair of these last night. Suhweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

• #2499
Thanks for the information guys. I'm confident with my AV system but new to record players. I live 2 mins from a richer sounds so I'll pop in after work today and see what they have so I can actually see the build quality of the cheaper ones and stuff

You'll reallly notice the difference in the Sony and Rega. The Rega is actually nice, Sony 90's plastic junk.
Cheeers for that, sorry, meant any other photos...
Going to get searching on ebay, think I want a pristine one.
