  • But I'm resisting... Decal done, wood specs all discussed with the builder, timber will be ordered today... :D

  • Morning kids. What's a decent price for a made in Japan Fender Jaguar, including case, but bit beaten up?

  • look on ebay for recently completed items, it'll give you a fair guess

  • Cool stuff alert for DIY'ers: chap buys shitload of original Dan Armstrong mahogany bodies, necks and parts, tries to sell as job lot, no takers... so he's parting out kit guitars.

  • I want one... My mate has had a black one for years, stunning guitar...

  • If i wanted to make a cheap baritone guitar, could I just slide the bridge back on a telecaster?

  • No, if you shift the bridge back you change the scale length but you're not changing the distances between frets to match it. It won't intonate. You need a replacement neck to make this work.

I'm almost certain that Crimson guitars make a aftermarket baritone neck for you to do this, their website is a bit of a pain to navigate through though. I imagine there's a lot of other places that make similar.

  • Don't think so, I think you'd end up with some kind of a microtonal guitar. There are baritone conversion necks available. I've been actually meaning to put together a baritone tele, so far I've got the neck and pickups.

  • Good shout, but the beaten-upness of it seems to be throwing things. An average price is about £450 and this has really fucked paintwork, up for £350. I would like a Jag for this surf project that I'm doing but not sure if this is a good deal. Hmm hmm hmm.

  • Actually, there's a picture here of the difference between the necks:

    http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/Tele_BaritoneNeck.aspx

You're changing the scale length by shifting the nut away from the bridge (rather than moving the bridge backwards), and having corrected fret distances in between.

  • ah. makes sense. thanks!

  • so in laymans terms, how much will it mess something up if i put a bass neck on a tele but put 6 strings on?

  • You are a troll aren't you?

  • You could try... I'd be surprised though.

Assuming the replacement neck fitted in the neck pocket, the scale length (nut -> bridge) has to be twice the length of the nut -> 12th fret. Anything else won't intonate. At least, that's the rules for a standard guitar, I assume it's the same for a baritone (which is just a longer scale length neck with more frets); don't know anything about basses...

Something like this would tell you where all the frets should be given your scale length.

edit: I've just looked up the bass scale lengths and they're massive. This won't work :)

    This won't work :)

Thanks! Just idly musing while I'm meant to be doing work....

  • No worries. I had a quick look for necks, I'm surprised there aren't more of them on ebay at reasonable prices.

  • I'm going to go and find out what intonation is etc i think....

  • 'just spend £600'
    lolz

  • Tim let me have a go on a few of his guitars today (and measure the crap out of his blue '66 Ventures MkII)... Here he is with his MkII in the foreground... Bought some Gotoh Grovers today so bridge, pickup and pegs all paid for...

Had a great old time in there today with other super guitar nerds, Sunday's the only day Tim is in the shop so all the übernerds come in... ;)

    Few more pix, just because...

  • Also played these two, '65 MkI and a Wosrite Royale (the black one) which is the model Tim made for Nikki from the Hellacopters...

We also had a very interesting conversation regarding Epiphone Crestwood Customs (probz my Holy Grail guitar), Tim has a beautiful original cherry '66 but he also has two of his own unfinished versions which he started over ten years ago and is thinking about finishing up... Guess who put his name down for the white one? *taps nose*

    I love Australia...

    Please excuse the paunch...

  • Supergeeky but i love it.

  • wait. supergeeky. i love it. no but.

  • Cheers for the Klone Rick. Sounds fantastic. Come on then nerds, recommend me a pedal board and power supply for this little lot.
