  • yeah i guess it was a bit of nothing... i think there is a time and a place for a bell which goes hand in hand with riding with care, attention and understanding..

    what a boring fucking post.....

  • i've started to shout where i am going. like turning off a main road.

    For what reason?

  • Not AT people. but more of a statement of what I am doing. to try an cut out the both stopping or both going at the same time equation. like cars at a roundabout. when they approach roundabout/junction at the same time. both stop for the other and then attempt to go at the same time.. top avoid when I start my left turn manoeuvre to turn they don't start to cross the road.. if they are already crossing then obviously i do not yell in their ear.

  • Two cyclists that should have known better than to cycle up the inside of a bus waiting at the lights on Oxford/Regent St this morning while I waited behind. Took great pleasure in overtaking them after they'd realised the error of their ways and stopped once the bus had pulled away and drifted to the left.

  • I don't understand why some cyclists always feel the need to undertake (complete with the one footed scoot). Overtake if it's safe, otherwise hang back

On my commute home there's a 0.5 mile long hill up to a set of traffic lights. Normally a queue of cars for the last 0.25 mile up to the lights.
Had someone on a knackered MTB (with hood up) come past me on the way up the hill. He stubbornly stuck to trying to undertake the cars, including scooting and riding on the pavement. No cars coming the other way, so I quite happily overtook all the stationary cars.
I made it to the top of the hill before him, he then pulled up beside me (on the pavement) and started staring at me. I just rode off when the lights changed...

  • Almost felt sorry for the guy on a fairly new looking Fuji last night who had already jumped a few red lights and was drifting from side to side. He then popped onto the pavement to beat the buses which were queued at the lights as you come onto E&C to go south. Suddenly there was a loud bang and his front wheel had punctuated as he hopped back off the pavement. Didn't look like the sort of chap to have tools/pump/inner tube. Would/should have stopped but it was hammering it down and I already have a cold plus the fact he had almost taken me and a few others out when he cut left to right.

  • Suddenly there was a loud bang and his front wheel had punctuated as he hopped back off the pavement.

Did he do a full stop?

  • This, or a 'YOOOOOO'

  • After that Linda Grant article I invested in one. Well, after a control period of 2 weeks wherein 21 people walked out in front of me.

Since I got it, the only difference I've experienced is that while the same number of people walk out in front of me, some of them stop dead in the road when the bell sounds.

    WTF?

  • Pretty obvious that @markairsy1 is not addressing the situation where a ped is already in the road, but rather when they are about to step off into your path.

  • I've replaced the bell with a speaker blaring out top quality tunes. Marginally more effective but also pisses off more people, that's a win in my book.

  • Italian house stuff?

  • Status Quo, Phil Collins, Bon Jovi

  • Mother fucker.

  • You're not the person I thought I saw then. You'd still get heckled though.

  • looks like a class A douche to me. Glad you are ok mate!

  • What a pratt^^

    ON BELLS

I think a bell is really useful, like @umop3pisdn said, used 'correctly'. So I've come to the conclusion that 'correctly' could mean NOT ringing a bell at the moment that people are already crossing and you're bearing down on them - you missed your bell window. Ringing your bell well in advance works loads better - by that I guess I mean only about one or two seconds earlier than you actually need people to not be there where your line is.

If you missed the moment, don't ring your bell after that like that douche ringing their bell does. Just suck it up, let people cross, ride at walking pace etc.

Timing is everything. Ask my lovers.

  • OH, and 'ring-riiing' and 'ding-dong' proper oldskool bells are so much less douchey than 'ting. ting. ting.' Srsly.

  • Timing is everything. Ask my lovers.>

    Ring bell. End. #ringbellend

  • 'ding-dong' proper oldskool

  • I think I'm going to invest in a bullhorn.
