Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

  • looking to build/buy some disc wheels for my new caad10 disc. I don't want to spend a huge amount and not fussy about branding as would desticker (think £200-300) so have been thinking about some superstars - £159 gets you "aero road" alex rims on some misc disc hubs weighing 1950g

however I could also buy some vision disc hubs for roughly £50 in the planet x sale and could then potentially build them onto some lighter rims - maybe chinese crabon clinchers - and not have all the horrible clincher sidewall melting on braking fears many others have. are there any disc carbon rims about which arent massively expensive?

  • Depends on what you mean by massively expensive. Light Bicycle are relatively cheap for carbon, around £220 - £240 for a pair of rims including shipping.

  • with duty ontop that makes the whole build quite expensive.. but not impossible so thank you. its a bit of an odd one, the market for "mid-tier" disc wheels doesnt really exist - hunt wheels do a pair for £350 at about 1495g. Again I must ask myself whether aero or weight is priority

  • I think at that price I would go with the superstars, more "aero"

  • Ahhhh - thanks. Looks right up mein strasse.

I trust the Germans to make a good of wheels.

  • Let me know how you get on, I'm waiting for an excuse to pull the trigger on a set myself.

  • HED and Specialized just sent out a press release regarding a recently-approved HED patent from 2009 that... http://fb.me/4KgpTC7pg

This might make some brands disappear and Cheapina wheels even more appalling, I mean appealing.

  • Depends almost entirely in HED I would think, and how much they want to licence the design.

Smaller companies like Flo Cycling and Boyd might be priced out of existence- or HED might simply be defending its IP, and want a nominal sum alongside the licence agreement stating that the wide aero rim is produced under said licence.

The Chinese factories are going to laugh all the way to the bank if it's the first, show me the money, situation with HED.

  • Apologies for bringing this up again, but considering these:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/38mm-clincher-25mm-width-carbon-wheelset-700C-road-bicycle-full-carbon-clincher-/331694791802?

Slightly concerned wokecycle seem to be a relative newcomer to the chinese carbon market. Is it worth spending £50 extra and going for a more established seller (carbonzone, CN carbon etc). Or it is likely that they're all selling the exact same rims at slightly different prices?

  • Could it be why Mavic have largely not gone wide/fat?

  • Possibly. Although I thought the new gen Ksyrium were at least going that way.

But then they are hardly an aero wheel.

  • christ those are cheap arent they

  • I guess its cheaper to sell and ship shit carbon than dumping in China ..

  • Yup. Too cheap?

It's not as if the other aliexpress/ebay stores are selling them at wildly more expensive prices. Makes me think it's all exactly the same stuff from the same factories.

On the other hand, I do like the amount of face and skin I've currently got.

  • Yup. Too cheap?

It's basically 'buy hubs, get rims, spokes, nipples and wheelbuild for free'

  • SO CHEAP. Tempted but looks dodgy. Guess these might well be a good few years old.

  • Yeah it's too cheap isn't it.

These guys seem to have a decent reputation and they're selling the equivalent wheelset for £375:

  • Does anyone have much experience with Reynolds attack carbon clinchers? I purchased a second hand pair and whilst the front looks in great nick the rear (visibly/aesthetically) is not so much. The rear brake track is considerably more warn and there is no carbon weave visible (like the front) on the brake track or rim profile... does anyone know if the rims naturally have this difference?

forgive me, this is my first foray into carbon road wheels so have little/no experience.

  • front:

    Rear:

It appears the photos in add only really showed the front rim close up.

  • Fuck chinese carbon. Got a set of 303s instead.

In a totally unrelated matter, anyone wanna buy an immaculate 2012 supersix (58) with sram force 10 speed and superstar/reynolds 46/66mm carbon clinchers...?

  • I want to get a new wheelset for my road bike.

What do you think of a DT Swiss DICUT R20 ?

    Can I have a better allround wheelset for 385€ (+-300£) ?

  • More resolutions please.

I doubt there is a natural different between the two. Is there a noticeable dip in the brack track? Maybe fire an email off to Reynolds to see what they think?

  • Would take the wheels if you split.
