  • Toys, Ides and Star are the three hills my club often does on that route (or similar).

  • Anyone got a decent/quiet route to Southend? Need to exhale away from London some.

  • I rode this yesterday http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9748549

I was looking for hills to train on and I found them.

Up along Lea River was alright quite flat, but good gravel. Not as many people walking on the path as you might expect. But still it would be great to avoid pedstrians.

If anybody has suggestions to how I can avoid riding up to Wormley area without riding where people are walking and how to avoid heavy traffic from Potter's Bar to Wood Green, I will appreciate it.

Also if I have missed some sick hills in that area or near pls let me know.

  • How easy is it to get an afternoon train from Oxford to London with bike, like 4pm? Every single advance service I look up on the FGW website says "no bike reservations available".

Customer service by phone/tw were no help at all ("try your luck with staff on the platform btw no refunds for advance tickets").

  • Mixed bag - lots won't do reservations as they're small trains without a bike bit to put it in, so there is no space to reserve. Used to commute that route and it was different every day - I'd say you'll probably be ok, but wouldn't guarentee it.

Alternative - either the X90 or Oxford Tube coaches, both departing from the coach station in the center of town take bikes, are cheap, and pleasant (big coaches, wifi etc). Take about 90 minutes.

  • Thanks mate, I didn't even think of coaches.

  • The coaches are pretty great - run every 10 mins or so.

  • I had to take my bike from London to Didcot (so 1 stop past Oxford) and back last weekend and it was fine both ways.

Outbound about 4pm on Sat had a proper bike coach at the front.

Inbound about 8pm on Sunday was also fine. They said there was no space but I just kind of looked at them until they let me put my bike in! Then changed at Reading for a train to Clapham Junction which had no bike space as such. Just stuck our bikes (x2) in the open section near the toilets.

  • At the end of September me and a few mates will be riding from Chesham to Brighton, hoping to make the route hit 100 miles. Not too fussed on how long it takes aslong as we do it within a day and can get back to London. Will I recieve a torrent of abuse if I lead everyone down the downs link for the 40 odd miles from guildford to brighton. 2 of us will be fixed, 2 geared, all on 25c tyres as far as I know.

  • Anyone know of any particularly good routes starting around Glasgow (I know)?
Spending a week there with my girlfriend next week and will be riding my bike while she does her job.

  • Yes! Take the cycle path-y route out of Glasgow center (nice, along river, avoids all roads - gentle cruising rather than strava-busting) then take route 7 from Loch Lomand into the Trossachs) - beautiful cycling, beautiful scenery. Reckon you could split off route 7 at Callander (which is lovely btw and def worth a visit - some cracking pubs for afternoon ale stops) and either loop back to Glasgow if you wanted a 100 mile-ish circular, or aim for train station of your choice to A-B it. Definitely recommend continuing along route 7 as far as you can, all of it is amazing, and the A85 through Crianlarich is lovely too...

    Edit: Route 7 link: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-7

  • What sort of distance do you want? Fancy hills or flatter rides? Whereabouts are you staying?

Personally, I don't think you can go far wrong in heading north into the Campsie Fells. Stunning scenery and quiet roads. Loch Lomond is beautiful and you can see the Highland Fault run through it, and, as @owl says, the Trossachs are well worth a visit too.

Heading west into Renfrewshire and out towards the Ayrshire coast is good too.

For a big day out you could ride the route of the long standing Scottish classic road race, Glasgow-Dunoon. Head up Loch Lomond side, turn left at Tarbet, through Arrochar, over the Rest And Be Thankful, then turn left onto the A815 just before Cairndow and ride down to Dunoon. Get the ferry across to Gourock and ride back to Glasgow.

  • Ta. Sounds interesting.

Staying in the west end and looking for hills/rolling of at least 100km for each day I'm here. Have ridden the way @owl suggested before and found the canal route pretty unpleasant but that might just have been the weather.

  • It'll be spectacular up there at this time of year, full Autumn colours. Enjoy it.

  • Aye, the canal route itself isn't much to write home about, but it's better than the roads and drops you off at Loch Lomond, so plenty to recommend it...

  • I'm in Norfolk this weekend, staying near Happisburgh and was hoping to get a ride in at the weekend. Any recommendations? I think I've read that the A road along the coast is pretty good so I'll probably head that way, towards Wells next the sea and Sheringham, I think. Anyone have some lanes I shouldn't miss?

  • Spent a week in Wells last May, and managed a couple of rides. The road along the coast is okay, but no coastal views of note. Inland is better west of Wells, with some nice lanes between the Walsinghams, the Creakes and the Burnhams. Avoid Burnham Market, it's clearly full of moneyed second homers and is a middle class hell.

  • Thanks. I'm not sure I'll get that far West, especially given the prevailing wind, but I might give it a go.

  • Does anyone know what the cycling is like round Borehamwood?

  • Just to follow up (and since there aren't many routes in this thread...) I rode this route when I was in Norfolk. I pilfered it from someone else on ridewithgps. Some lanes a bit grotty but overall it was great, particularly towards the western part of the route, which includes a bit of paved cycle route through the grounds of a National trust property.

    Here

  • Is there a forum approved route to Oxford?

  • Has anyone got a good route to the Redbridge cycling centre from Clapton/ Dalston area?

  • Yes. Will do later.

  • Less traffic. More scenic as well.

  • Awesome, there and back would be amazing! @fussballclub
