  • I bought this frame a few years ago because it was sparkly and I rode it fixed for a few months and since then I've been vaguely planning to put it back to stock campag record etc for a sort of Sunday Best, which is a strange phrase because Sundays are often when I seem to crash or fall off...

Anyway, nice campag is too expensive and I don't like the look of lots of it so I decided on Dura Ace 7400. I've seen Rossins from the era (about '89 I think) with DA but not one of these so its probably completely incorrect but oh well I've bought it now.

Hubs are 8s and I got brake/shifters, along with the little gubbins to run the cables off the downtube braze ons.

So far CyclePS in Camberwell took out the old headset and put in the new (old) 7400 BB and headset. Still looking for a DA seat post although I have a nitto 65 that's pretty and a kalloy that cost a tenner that looks exactly the same...

I'm not sure what to do about bars and stem, I've got some Cinelli Criterium drops and an XA but both are a bit scruffy. Not that bothered about a DA stem but I will probably get some new bars at some point.

This will be my first ever bike with gears (I built a AW3 speed for my sister...) and I have absolutely no idea how they work, how they are supposed to be connected up or what they're really used for so I will start with the wheels because I know how to do wheels.

Then its on to cleaning up the rest of the bits a bit more

    Parts
    Rossin Strada Professional SLX
    F Derailleur 7403
    R Derailleur 7402
    Crankset 7402
    Brakes 7403
Hubs I think are 7403 because they're HG compatible
Levers 7403 because aero? don't seem to say.

    Rims are TB14
Spokes are spokesave because I'm cheap
Clement Strada Gumwalls. No idea if these are shit or not but I wanted gumwalls and someone told me the paselas all have holes in them.

Haven't bought a cassette, will probably not buy a £100 NOS one, likewise chain and cables.

Cockpit haven't decided but probably black cork tape and probably a Rolls to sit on because I've already got one.

Not sure about pedals, I'd like some 80s looks but I only have spd commuter shoes so then I'd have to but another pair of shoes just for this bike but then I did find these

which are pretty serious but I have a nice pair of Quoc Phams that I never wear so maybe leather toe straps instead.

This isn't really as interesting as lots of the projects on here but I'm going to need some help, even if you're very bored would you mind just popping back every now and again in case I don't know what's going on? Ta.

  • So far I've laced up the rear wheel. The valve hole is in the wrong place and the spokes are too long.

have a cup of tea, ask holy Jah for advice and have another go.

  • Well you have all the bits to make a lovely bike. have you used spocalc to work out your spoke lengths? Have you measured the ERD of the rim yourself? If not to both then do both and see what the length you actually need are. you may also have a lacing error.

  • Jah Will Provide!

  • Yeah I thought I'd done the right things, I haven't actually measured the spokes to see if they were mislabeled... probably not.

  • Took some more photos in the sun because it's so sparkly.

Sparkly or not its coming away in big old chunks in some places, I don't want to touch it up with paint because it will definitely look shit but is there a clear coat option? Would something like clear nail varnish provide enough protection and stop more paint coming away at the edges?

    ummmm

  • Go get some DA spd pedals to complete thr groupset.
DA seat post are hard to come by and can be expensive, same goes for DA stems.
    But they are out there.

Lovely project, it'll ride very well and DA 7400 is a great choice for it. I am loving it on my Somec

  • Dem shoes.

  • That's lovely, I've made an ill advised stem choice I will photograph tomorrow

  • Yeah I think that is best, on the slow hunt now. Wish those shoes were Mich bigger but I will try and find something with a bit of pink

  • So I bought a pantographed stem... I don't really like panto'd things and its got italian colours on it which just adds to the race-war between bike and groupset. It's also not silver but I quite like it.

The bars are well scruffy and I know I'm going to regret not getting nicer ones but as I'm a little bit worried about the stem looking shit too I think I might just go ahead assume it might get redone... Tape will be black.

Saddle is from the ebay, I've never had a flite before so I am quite looking forward to seeing what my arse thinks about it.

So wheels are built and the easier of the screw on bits have been screwn on. I've got the brakes right-back/left-front which is CRAZY but otherwise the cables wouldn't work so I assume they are supposed to.

I still need a cassette. I bought one from HS but it disappeared in the post :-/ other than that and a chain I think I've got most of the rest of the stuff I need, got the Kalloy post in now but I'll get a nice DA fluted one at some point and decide on the shoes by which I mean pedals.

  • sorry about saddle angle haven't actually sat on it yet obvs

  • Very nice looking!
As I think I said already, really loving the DA stuff...not a fun of that saddle to be honest, but everything looks good!

  • thanks dude, I was thinking I'd probably find a black one if it ended up agreeing with my tail.

Once I've got some cogs and sorted the drive train, I'll have a little potter about to get the bars and levers in the right place, tape them up and then be able to decide whether I want a red saddle or not.

  • In case you decide to change, do find a Flite 1990, lovely saddle and they make a repro nowadays, so easy to grab one.

  • Get yourself to Accessorize or Superdrug and buy some red sparkly nail varnish to touch up the paint loss areas. No one will know.......

  • oh it always looks rubbish when I try and do that... I just want to seal it so it won't peel or crack at the edges where it's come off

  • +1 on 7400 DA pedals. old look delta system but would work with the shoes. stem matches the headset band nicely :)

  • Very nice, you have inspired me to go and look at mine which has been hanging around for at least 18 months after the painter painted it the wrong colour just before we flew to NZ to live. He did give me a refund as there was no time to correct it but I've still been having a sulk while I wait to see if the colour grows on me. I've been looking at it all day whilst standing at the lathe and I think the time has come to move it up to next on the list.

  • yeah bring out all the rossins. I got a "cool bike bro" and a nod from a guy on a blue rossin when they were both dodgy singlespeed conversions, mine possibly with bullhorns. how often does that happen between the dodgy peugeot conversion crowd? hopefully never.

Anyway the pedals are baffling me. Velobase has these which look pretty reasonable:

    But then ebay has these:

why does it look like it takes a cleat and also has toe straps? do you reckon you can unscrew those three screws and use them with flat shoes?

Put the drivetrain together on the bike today and then cut the the gear housing too short so I've to go and get some more tomorrow but it's then ready for a test ride!

  • It has a proprietary cleat but you can use them sans the cleat.

  • red saddle
