Nah, I've been too busy to actually do it. Looks like I'm having a massive case of can't be arsed in terms of riding today so might get it now.

I normally load up a linux live cd and use clonezilla on there.
If it's a hackintosh can't you just boot into OS X and clone the drive there?

Fucksake...
"Unfortunately the A490S Skylake system does not have the capability for an optical drive to be fitted."
Why does it have a fucking CD slot then? Argh
-
• #2355
Sorry whut?
Yeah, shouldn't a slimline drive fit in? Maybe thats the prob?
Just realised I can buy this case and chuck my parts in it. As soon as Apple brings out a 5k Display I'm buying it... -
• #2356
I'm just quoting what they said. I don't understand why they show a case with a slot and don't offer a drive for it. I've asked them if the photo is wrong or if there's no room for an optical drive or what...
-
• #2357
Very odd. Quick google is showing ones with no slot?

They are offering UMX2 and UMX3 cases and some of them (UMX2?) have disc slots but they don't offer drives for any case.
-
• #2359
"I do apologise, the case for A490S Skylake system has now changed to the the Cooltek UMX3 which is slightly different and does not have a slot"
So, what I'll likely do is continue to use my old machine for burning CDs and if I need it, I'll buy an external CD/DVD/bluray burner for the new machine. Still annoying as I was ready to throw money away yesterday and then road bump.
-
• #2360
In the two weeks you've been faffing with this you could of built one...

Arrgh thats annoying. Why on Earth doesnt it have a slot? My Mac's dont but they are all tiny, this is massive, it should have room.

Are you joking? I've looked at two websites and still taken two weeks to decide... imagine if I was picking individual components?! It'd never get delivered, let alone built.
There would be a 40 page discussion on which case to buy, then 100 pages on which mobo and by the time that was resolved a new case would be out and the process would start again...
-
• #2363
There quite a few cases now that don't support DVD drives.
I guess as OS and Apps are now downloaded and/or thumb drives are big enough now to hold the software they are getting a little redundant.
-
• #2364
Clean look? Less demand for optical drives? Lower noise? Better airflow?

Can't imagine a CD drive would have much impact on any of those... but hear what you are saying... I only ever use my external to transfer photos (35mm scans).
That other is no way as nice.
I put an extra fan into my Black box of doom a few days back and now the whole thing is noiser, I might start obsessing over noise reduction.

You are preaching to the choir here bro.
Or whatever the daft expression is.
I haven't had one in a Mac for 4-5 years. -

Do people still buy CDs any more? How do they copy stuff to their iTunes? That's the only reason I still have my Clevo laptop. That and DayZ.
-
• #2371
Yes.
The same people who wouldn't piss on iTunes if it was on fire.
-
• #2372
Go on then... indulge me. I know you've got nothing better to do. Since about version 9 it's a pain but for compatibility across devices it does the job of consolidating all the stuff I've uploaded over the years and sporadically download (without having to copy/convert/blah to separate cloud media libraries). I also like that I can control what I'm listening to on my computer from my phone. Would be interested in a nice looking alternative if you have suggestions?

Isn't there an Apple thread for this? This is the PC Tech thread, "Proper Computer" (cue Apple vs. Windows PC debate). I abandoned my iPod 10 years ago. It has sat in a drawer unused for that time. iTunes at the time was a slow, bloated pile of shite. I've only seen it recently on my gf's machine and not used it - can't tell if it's fast or not but it seems to be running a lot of shit in the background. I have no idea what you're talking about in terms of consolidation - what's wrong with a folder named 'Music' and a tonne of mp3s in it? Ipods lack of folder structure sucks arse. If I'm playing music on my computer I'm at my computer so I have no need for my phone talking to it and no idea what software might allow you to do that. Sonos rings a bell but that might be all standalone speakers/controllers.

Ha, simmer down Bill Gates, they are all just personal computers, no need to get all culty.
Also, where do dual boot Hackintosh's sit in your eyes?
Mac vs PC debate is such a yawn fest. -

You seem to have missed the point a little. But you would, ya fucking Mac user.
In case you can't tell I'm smiling to myself while typing all of this (see: :-) ). I still wouldn't use iTunes, that I'm serious about.
Hackintosh? Why?
If I had spare coin and more time to kill being a geek I'd buy a Mac laptop and dual boot it. But I don't so I won't. I just don't have enough time for 'playing' with computers any more. I want it to do the very basic set of things I need and I want it done well. I don't want to learn new ways of doing things unless they're better. Better, not different.
But did you buy it? I'm getting tempted by that case. Would be good to see pics of it irl in situ...
@fox you built a hack too? What's yours like/for/specs wise? As much hassle as mine was?
@wellisit can you explain about gpus about to get loads better? It's all still quite new to me.
