Android phones, apps and tablets

  • I listened to something on the radio the other day on which is was said that the FB app requests updates on the phone (not pushing updates to the phone) 5 times a second. Perhaps this has changed since they did the research... Perhaps not.

  • Have been using the Metal app, they need to work on the Twitter side as it often hangs. Also Nexus 5 owners have you been having trouble with WiFi using most of the battery life? Mine uses up to 38% of the battery. Have got it so it's off when the screen is lock and other tips but still really high.

  • I've uninstalled FB and FB Messenger and trying Metal instead. I'll see how I feel and what the battery does over the next week.

  • I've been webpage only phone forever. Works a treat.

  • FB has been killing my battery too... They have a low-memory, low-data app called Facebook Lite that is only available in countries like India, Brasil etc. I got the APK and have been using it for a few weeks, it works well (not as slick but really light). Another advantage is that it has Messenger baked in so got rid of that one too.

  • I use the Facebook web page on Chrome. Works ok 99% of the time and has messenger built in as well.

I have the Facebook app installed but frozen using Titanium Backup. Occasionally the website is fussy uploading or viewing pictures so I just defrost the app, use it and then freeze it again.

  • Got a new phone coming soon need to copy mesages & contacts over. Is Backup & Restore+ still a good app to use for this? Previously i had just started a fresh on the new phone when I had got it but don't want to do that this time.
Also, with other apps that I already have (such as Strava) can I just log out of it on the old phone and then download and log back in on the new phone?
Finally, when all is copied over if i want to sell the phone will a factory/master reset delete enough of my info to sell it?

  • Contacts just goes via sync.

Messages... what type? SMS is the only type that doesn't automatically move over.

Do be aware that some messaging apps may require you to deactivate the existing device so that you can activate the new device, i.e any messaging with encryption may do this.

  • SMS Backup & Restore was OK but I favour Titanium Backup

  • ^^For some reasons my phone won't update contacts via synch (it is quite old). Not sure if there is a setting that I need to enable but I can't find it.
Messages are SMS & MMS. It is the standard SMS app on my phone so I don't think there is any encryption.

^Titanium needs root so can't use that.

  • Anyone got a Nexus 4 with a cracked screen they fancy passing on to me for a rock bottom price?

  • I have a Nexus 4 with an intact screen that I may part with...? PM me.

  • On that note - does anyone have an old nexus 7 they don't want/a spare screen they'd be willing to part with?

  • Anyone want to buy a HTC One M8? 9/10 condition, always was in case and tempered glass screen protection

  • Metal looks pretty neat. The FB part is a little clunky, but Twitter is much better than anything else I found.

  • Interested in hearing recommendations for mobile tariffs for someone who is reasonably heavy on data but barely uses phone calls/messages now that Three are upping their tariffs

  • You can still get unlimited data with three for £20 a month if you don't make many calls (200 minutes).

  • Perfect for disabled people.

  • What if their disability is no hands and they need to make a lot of hands free calls but not use much data? You insensitive clot.

  • Android file transfer.

Keeps saying 'can't access device, if screen locked...' Any thoughts?

    Screen is NOT locked!

  • Happened to me today... Go into your phone and enable file transfer, default is charge only... Bloody annoying, took me quarter of an hour to figure out what was going on...

Doubly annoying because my N5's Bluetooth is on the Fritz as well so had to go home for a USB cable and then couldn't get the bastard to work!?!

  • Weird. Must have change it in a software upfate., as it worked before.
    Hate that kind of thing.
    Thanks!

  • Received my Moto X style today, very happy so far. 445€ for a custom-color 64GB is a good price (plus Google gave me 400€ back for my malfunctioning Nexus 5).

  • Question. I've got Huawei P8 that's testing my patience and want to upgrade.

£375 for a Nexus 6P or £249 for the OnePlus 2. My last three phones have all been dual sim.

I've seen that most people on here seem to be pleased as chips with their Nexi and I really liked the Nexus 4 BITD (mrs still uses it today). But dual sim and £125 is pushing me towards the O+ 2.

    What to do?
