Excellent! It was mainly to lament the absence of NE as a North East London postcode (and S for South Londoners). As you can see in hms' shot, it did exist once, from 1856, before being merged with E and N in 1868/9. It was eventually reassigned to Newcastle.
There are quite a few other streets with the old signs showing NE.
Apparently we have Anthony Trollope to thank for this. He was commissioned to find ways to cut costs in the post office and discovered that NE and S residents were an unusually illiterate bunch who didn't write enough letters to justify their own postcode anymore. Charming. (shamelessly stolen from Londonist)

So does that mean that the Tower Street street sign is at least 150 years old?
-
• #17187
On my way. :)

Potentially, although people continued to use the old NE code long after it was officially abolished, (according to that article) and even the road signs continued to show it up to 1917, so it might not be quite as old as 150 years.

You hot-footed fellow. I was about to leave Brixton to get there before 6, no point now.

Or they nicked one from Newcastle.
Does anyone know why the street was renamed to Martello from Tower? Is there a coastal defense connection?

Great to see you, Howard, and thanks for the beer.
You might want to edit out your details in the post above now. :)

Ah, you should have come, anyway. We could have done a double tag.
Next time!

I thought that was an excellent tag by Howard, following up with another 'formerly' street. Easy to find, too. Story here:
I tried hard to think of another related tag, but I hadn't twigged the obvious connection, to perhaps look for another one of these before I left. Oh well.

You too! Let's try and get something sorted in lieu of the London Classic.

For sure! Was BGR packed when you went down? Mad around 6.20 p.m.

It was OK, nothing out of the ordinary. I had some fun looking at rat-running patterns around Old Bethnal Green Road, though. Since they closed the junction with Cambridge Heath Road (for bridge work), there's been a lot of action involving Clare Street, Temple Street, etc. Some silly driving going on.

oops, yes, I was a bit muddled there. 'Just' housing as you said.
Edit: I think it may have confused it with Haggerston Park
