  • I'm currently considering my options for a new pair of disc hubs. I've been using Novatec but would prefer something that's a bit more serviceable, especially getting at the bearings.

    I'm looking for 28 hole, 11 speed, hubs. Budget is flexible but I don't think I'm ever going to stretch to Chris King type levels of expense.

    What are my options? Any recommendations?

  • I should add, I'd prefer the option to switch end caps for qr or thru axle.

  • Is is possible to buy petrol made from oil that hasn't been come from Saudi Arabia?
    Do any petrol station groups Esso, Texaco, Murco etc only use oil from certain countries?
    Or is it all mixed up in a giant vat a the refineries?

    I have a pair of DT240's, they can be configured in a number of different ways by swapping the end-caps and the freehub body, half the price of the 180's.

    Both crude oil and refined products are almost perfectly fungible, the only way to drive on something from a known source is to switch to a bio fuel (ethanol or bio diesel) and source from a supplier whose agricultural policies meet your approval. If anything, that actually reduces the sum of human happiness even more than funding the real Islamic State does, but it's your call.

    If you want to punish the house of Saud (and every right thinking person should), your only other practical option as a consumer is just to consume less energy.

  • Struggling to get my head around disc brakes for the road.

    I have 160mm discs from an old bike already and am looking to get some HY/RDs, how does the compatibility work? Are frames and forks set for a specific disc size, say 140mm or 160mm etc or are the mounts or callipers adjustable. Does that make sense? I'm confused.

  • IS and post mounts are usually 160 front, 140 rear with adaptors to go bigger, there are also now flat mount callipers although I've not really looked into those much yet.

  • You can go bigger with different adaptors, but for road stuff you won't need to.

  • Cheers Rob, so would I be ok with 2 x 160mm rotors on a pickenflick with kinesis disc forks or would I need adaptors?

  • Talking of swapping bits of hubs to change the axle, I've got some DMR revolver front qr hubs on my polo bike. I've never been that happy with the qr, even with decent shimano ones. I want to stick a 9mm thru axle on them, they currently have 6000 bearings in with 10mm ID and an axle that goes through the end caps and sticks out into the forks. I've ordered some 629 bearings with a 9mm ID, some tubing to knock up a spacer to stop the bearings getting squished and a superstar thru axle. Should this all go together OK or have I missed something, my main worry is the interface between the bearings and the axle, I'm guessing the axles are a little under 9mm, normally end caps work as spacers between bigger ID bearings and the axle in these set ups but I can't really see why what I'm doing won't work.

  • What brakes/adaptors do you have at the moment? There's no reason you wouldn't be able to get those rotors to work assuming you have the right brakes/adaptors to go with them.

  • Ah, sorry, getting HY/RDs, they come with whatever you want anyway, I think pickenflicks are IS front and rear so get them and they usually come with rotors if you're getting new.

  • The kinesis disc forks that came with my 4s are flatmount but come with a 160mm post mount adaptor.

    The rear on the 4s disc is also flatmount but comes with a 160mm post adaptor. Problem is, the disc rotor rubs on the frame when I'm sprinting, so I'm now waiting on a 140mm flat to post adaptor. YMMV depending on frame clearance and where your hub puts your rotor.
