  • I've replaced the wheel on a friend's bike and had to cold set the frame and respace the rear hub to fit.

Now the axle is too long for the QR to close properly, it is closing on the axle rather than the dropout so the wheel slips.

Spacers on the outside of the dropout, or hacksaw to the axle?

  • Think I might have this on my bike. How do you diagnose closing on the axle?

  • File the axle rather than hacksaw, presumably you are only going to be taking off a millimetre or so.

  • A shorter axle is required, but how you achieve this is up to you; personally, I never miss the opportunity to chop stuff up.

I'd rather use a Dremel though: more sparks and the risk of a life-changing injury always spices things up...

  • Measure twice cut once.
