I agree that you may make less from a sale if you have to ship it, so sell it local if you can. But if you can't, you need to consider the added costs and if you don't want to take the hit, then don't sell.

If you agree to deliver something you've sold and you delegate that responsibility to a third party, that's your choice and your responsibility.
It's not reasonable to expect someone to pay for insurance which doesn't cover them: if something is lost in transit, only the sender (not the recipient) has a claim against whoever was shipping it.
Paypal's Buyer Protection (or credit card chargeback etc) covers the buyer and they are expected to pay for it. Shipping insurance covers the seller and I can't see how it can be argued that they shouldn't pay for it.
