  • looks like novatec of some sort, message me as I've got a bucket of about 50 campag novatec freehub's at work

  • Cheers, that's what I thought initially but the pawls on the novatec ones I have seen are different and use a wire spring rather than those individual springs....

  • After the whole crank arm came off during an Iron Man thanks to a shop mechanic doing something terribly wrong on the pre-race service a few years ago, I don't think he trusts anyone (with his bike).

@Pifko I may be interested personally but won't have money for a while, but dad's definitely a buy-new kinda guy (slowly you lot can see why I have so much trouble getting him away from Mavic and Shimano?)

I told him I referred to him as a Mamil after he turned his nose up at the DT's.

  • The cranks arm coming out is a pretty common incident from inexperienced mechanic (not tightening the crank bolt properly) unfortunately, but I can understand his reluctant.

Shimano are fine, better value than Mavic IMHO.

If he's serious about speed, point him to the direction of Zipp.

  • Any thoughts on the Ritchey WCS Zeta II? Tubeless ready, 17C, 1444grams for 2/3 the price of a C24 TL.

  • Got some 32h Ambrosio Excursion rims in the Planet X sale and planning on building them up 3x with some decent 11spd hubs to use as general touring/training wheels.

Current thought is either 2nd hand Campag Record which is what I run on the bike, or new Ultegra 6800 as 11spd spacing is identical and in theory, it won't make a difference to the shifting if I am using a shimano cassette. Another plus is Ultegra is still cup and cone, whereas finding the relevant part number, ordering and replacing fucked press in bearings ruins my life whenever I need to do it, which even at once a year is far too often.

Am I missing a trick or should be looking at some other options?

Excursion wasn't all that even when 20mm wide rims were considered OK for general road use. Don't waste your time building them into wheels.

  • They're 15 quid rims that are firstly going to be subjected to my dubious wheelbuilding skills, then get flung about UK potholes-I'd say they're perfect for my purposes really and having worn out some Archetypes in record time because it's been so fucking wet up here I'm sure it will be a decision too short lived to regret.

  • Why not 32h touring rims instead?

  • mostly because I've a rigida sputnik on my dynamo wheel and it weighs about the same as the rest of the bike. These will mostly be for running around town and shortish tours-I only tour on 28c too so not too fussed for the width really. Mostly these were cheep so thought I'd give them a punt-even if Tester no can no longer countenance the revolting and unacceptable use of 20mm rims on the road any more.

  • Here you go.

Abet not touring but cheap and reasonably weighted.

  • I'm not finding much technical info about these that makes me think they're better than the Ambrosios?

Was more interested in alternative hub options out there tbh as rims are already ordered.

  • Shimano 5800 hubs.

  • Shimano 5800

This. No point paying the extra for Ultegra on beater wheels.

  • Recommendations for disc specific rims please. Looking for widish, black, 32h, lightish rims. Have looked at Hed Belgiums, but silly expensive, anybody got experience with Stans Grails?

  • Had this discussion in the wheelbuilding thread recently, hard to beat DT R460db on price, weight and width...

  • Minimum tyres size you want to run it on?

  • @andy_k Cheers, will have a look at them.
@edscoble will be running 28mm upto 35mm tyres.

  • pacenti sl25 disc rims and tubeless compatible

  • Cheers. Only slightly more expensive than grails, within budget.

  • Look at ZTR Crest, lightest 29ers rims you can buy, lighter than even expensive road rims.

As long you don't go smaller than 28mm as its pretty wide.

  • How safe is it to ride with one spoke missing? This happened tonight on the way home! Dunno how this happened but it was dang loud!

  • The pacentis are designed for road tubeless pressures

My LBS said they were lovely to build with and tubeless road disc is generally working well for me.

  • Pacenti CL25 for £29.99 each at Planet X at the moment. 28h only though.

  • I'm sure that will just buff out Ho.
