Small progress in the mission that is digging through the piles of old parts strewn around the flat. I've one ok-ish big chainring, a 53t with a tooth missing and one of the mounting nuts epoxied back in. It's 130bcd which gives me the option of either 165mm or 175mm cranks. Both my road bikes are 172.5 so I'll probably go with the 175 to start with and experiment with the shorter cranks later on. If i end up having to buy a new chainring I may go a 52t 110bcd so I can use 172.5 cranks.
I haven't found a braze on front mech or an inner ring yet, although I'm confident I have a coupe of 130bcd 39t rings somewhere as I used to just mash around in the big ring all the time. But as discussed earlier, I don't know if I'll bother with the inner ring anyway.
I have also managed to salvage a couple of rear derailleurs - I'm being nice and putting the 5700 short cage onto the GFs winter bike which means I'm left with a mid cage 6600 for this - I'm sure I'll negate a load of aero benefits elsewhere with the cage dangling in the wind but i'll run it super tight to minimise the profile and it will do the job (unless I find a buyer for my old Cube frame and go 11spd).
That's a 12-25 cassette in decent nick too. I might have a 12-23 somewhere too, at least keeping this 10spd will use up all the only slightly worn cassettes we seem to have accumulated.
I appear to have a load of disc wheels on my eBay watch list for some weird reason...

165mm cranks would stiffen up the gearing a little: 53x12 is pretty leisurely :)

I think I've a 50 in serviceable condition that could go on the 110bcd 172.5mm cranks - I kinda forget that I spin a little more than I used too! At least they are easy things to swap around, I've also just found a couple of 4bolt shimano cranks on ebay that are tempting as I have a full compliment of ring sizes for them.

50 on a TT beik?
u mad bro

Not sure if an accomplished tester or not, but I've managed 29mph rides on gears significantly shorter than 50/11.
Tjat said, if I was building a geared TT bike i'd probably put at least a 58t chainring on, just cos.

I'm sure I could do fine but, yeah, it's gotta be the big boy rings for this one. I'll probably end up riding in 53/25 half the time!

Took more than a moment and might have got your hopes up under false pretenses - sorry!

Thanks, I'm watching a couple of options on ebay ending this w\end but I might jump on those if they play out - I've been watching the wrong sub-forum for bars!
Got the frame yesterday: 6800 BB in good condition along with a Chorus headset - I hadn't considered that it would be 1" headset so need to pick up a shim. Saddle and seatpost were included too. No nasty surprises so far. I've put some nail polish on a couple of damaged bits of paint to seal it, attached rear mech and cranks and pulled the old cables. The seller had obviously re-run the inners after removing their drivetrain to make it easier to pull fit new ones (internal full length outer), but i still managed to loose two of them in the frame. Luckily it's nice and clean inside so was easy to run guide tubes through. I'll stick some wheels in it and get a photo later.
I need to try and ignore this for a couple of weeks while I try to prep for an assessment centre interview, would much rather be building the bike!

Couple of bad pics of the current situation:
I was a little concerned by the very short 25.0 seat post but looking good so far - that's it set, very roughly, at the same height as my road bike and reach is very similar too. That gives me a good ammount of room for adjustment of reach at least as I'm on a 130mm stem on the road bike.

Hey man, great thread! I bought an old TT frame a while back which came with a fair few bits I've no need for. I can let you have them for super cheapz if you need. I've got a Pro Synop cockpit (with a couple of different extension options), Sram TT500 levers (red) and 10spd TT shifters (although looks like you have these covered). Need to have a dig, but pretty sure I'll have 10 spd ultegra front and rear mechs and a Sram Apex chainset (53/39). I'll have a look properly tonight at the parts bin, but give me a shout if any of that sounds useful. Oh I've also got a virtually brand new ISM Adamo saddle (think it's the road version) which Mrs Ratty bought but instantly disliked!

whoosh and it's gone! would've jumped on that if I'd seen it in time.
In better news sold my old rd bike frame - for £100 less than I would have liked! :'( - so I now have some pennies towards this build.
@Ratty you want to DM me pics and prices of the cockpit and TT500 levers please? Are the shifters shimano, in which case i'm cool but interested if they are sram r2c. Might be tempted by the Adamo too.

Trying to resist the urge to blow the budget and buy a damaged Zipp disc...
Also found some 2nd hand 55/42 (or 46) tooth Sram aero chainrings but £60

Haha, I was watching that Disc too. Only properly read the description when the 15min reminder popped up.
"The wheel has a small crack in it, which is covered up with tape"

Haha, yeah I left it, was only willing to go to 175 anyway, esp with the lack of pics of the damage.
Are Ral Tech the only covers worth getting? I've a couple of old wheels I could use them on, although I think I'll wait until I've the rest of the build. Really need to sort out bars, hopefully have something sorted by the end of the week - not getting distracted by this to prep for my interview isn't going so well!

Pretty much
Cool looking project, I like budget TT. I'm enjoying who's replying already!
As said, you can make a lot of aero gains by changing the nut on the handlebars. Have you got a big mirror you can set yourself up next to? Ideal for looking at your position. Or a big window is nice and reflective when it's dark. Turbo trainer and smartphone taking a movie from the side is also good.
It might not be a bad idea to use those clip on bars to start with if they're cheap. You can use them to find a comfortable position. I chopped up a £15 set so I could mount them where I wanted them and this worked out a lot cheaper than starting with an expensive set and finding they weren't ideal.
