• Wonder what they picked him up for that he is suddenly now on the database.

Anything. Swabs are taken for any arrestable offence, and any offence is arrestable.

  • But they were probably arrested for touching kids, punching nuns, and shitting on kittens.

Aye, but it does mean he has been naughty (or suspected of naughtiness enough to get lifted), clearly an upstanding gentleman of good character.

    Almost certainly this.

  • just about to report a cabbie. he was in a bus lane near old street behind cyclists near a left hand turn. im to the right of him with some motorcyclists to go straight on. lights change, paralell with the cab, he decides to pull left into me, i try to move, motorcyclists have to move, i hit his cab door to stop him killing me. he predictably goes on a big rant about how im in the wrong lane, how " your lucky i have passengers here" dont you touch my cab etc. i asked him whether he would prefer me to not touch his cab and just let him run me over. i stayed surprisingly calm which is unusual... think i got his plates right but he decided to accelerate through the next amber light. wish he had to stop so i could chat with his passengers

  • is there a dedicated london taxi complaints? i found this but looks crappy..http://www.londonblacktaxis.net/complaints.htm

  • PCO.

They won't give a monkey's, unless you were a passenger in the cab.

  • ah well. im going to the police tomorrow. Just checked the DVLA and even through the adrenalin i remembered the license. he even did that thing of accelerating to get in front of me and then putting his brakes on

    fuck this guy

  • Best thing to do about this? Beyond email the person directly.

  • smash off their wing mirrors, they can't take passengers until they are replaced. it's a cunt tax

  • fuck this guy

Uber has this nailed, don't worry.

  • Hmmm. Not sure having an unregulated, casual taxi fleet is really progress.

  • If only the black cab drivers would charge reasonable fares, then they would have no competition. Tier 3 charge after 10pm. £20 to get from London Bridge to Victoria in clear enough traffic.

Puts them on nearly £60 per hour. Passing the Knowledge is no easy thing, but it's hardly skilled.

  • I think it's fairly skilled to be able to know a route, understand the traffic flows of the day, what affects it etc etc.

There's a cracking documentary on BBC about the knowledge and passing it in the 90s.

  • I've used uber, once (so enough to make a solid judgement on the company as a whole....). The first booking arrived at the destination to collect me, and couldn't work out how to get from there to the collection. The second driver turned up and wasn't aware college road was a private road. And also didn't know where he was going.

  • The knowledge is BS. Countless times I have had to direct a black cab driver and the price is outrageous. Uber wins. Pro competition.

  • Not sure having an unregulated, casual taxi fleet is really progress.

Well yeah, one business model getting fucked by another may or may not look like progress depending on what you value.

I think we can have a technology driven, convenient, pleasant cab fleet with or without the regulation you describe. Hopefully we'll get there. But the black cabbies and their antiquated, entitled attitude and closed shop need to die, first. Die or wake up.

  • I think it's fairly skilled to be able to know a route, understand the traffic flows of the day, what affects it etc etc.

No doubt it's skilled. But computers have reduced its value enormously. I can learn to recite the bible backwards - I can't expect to get paid £600 day for it.

  • The value of cabbies is the considered, reasonable and tolerant discourse, surely?

  • "...the bible backwards backwards..."

You are the devil and ICMFP.

  • Uber with drivers is only a stopgap. Uber with driverless cars is where they want it to end up.

  • Ninja edit

@TW depends if you are discussing the value of the service they provide or the value of them as people I guess. I'm doing the former.

  • There service and the people are one on the same - A cab ride would not be a cab ride, unless you get to hear about how immigrants are taking our jobs, women and welfare cheques, it's that sharia, innit, I 'ad that bloke off of the telly in my cab last week.

  • This definitely needs a "How Audi drivers think they drive" and "How Audi drivers actually drive" edit.
