Are you using gpx track files or gpx route files?
But as an aside I have only do the distance/time to next to work consistently on my etrex 30 using route files. On my 800 not consistent.

I've never used it but do you have turn-by-turn on?

Apologies if this has been addressed already but how do I get "Distance to Next" to work properly? Did some Google searches and it seems that all I need to do is add a waypoint at the start then it will go from that waypoint to your next one rather than those highpoint and lowpoint ones that it puts it by itself.
I'm thinking of Audax riding in particular where it's handy to know how far it is to the next control so I tend to put them in as Waypoints and it's great when it works but mostly it doesn't.
