  • The life aquatic of Steve zissou

Not really lol material (for slapstick funny I like naked gun & naked gun the series & young Frankenstein) but found it funny in a way Costeau's material is referenced.

    For darker funny...

    Weird Belgian: Louis-Michel.
The guard is also funny and of course in Bruges for something in a similar vein.

  • Has anyone seen "Hard to be a God?"

    It's a very long sit...

  • Thoroughly enjoyed The Revenant and it's absolutely gorgeous to look at. Leo has crawling around dialled the fuck down.

  • the revenant would have been 100% better had they replaced leonardo di caprio with liam neeson - the undisputed king of the revenge fillum. because that's pretty much all it is.

  • Every film is a revenge film...

  • Watch Seraphim falls which has Neeson. Same shit, different actors.

  • Hugely disappointed by The Revenant.

Pro's - beautiful scenery; a few (maybe two) long shots put to good use; great acting by Leoonardo Dicaprio for the section of the film where he didn't have to talk; bear scene; not much else.

Con's - Tom Hardy playing a slight variation on the character that he always plays; Leo's acting when he started talking more frequently towards the end; loads of superfluous long shots having no great effect other than to get critics talking; the number of ordeals that Leo's character had to go through becoming laughable - it became like a very violent slapstick/Tom & Jerry cartoon and people were laughing in the cinema; faux arty shots that didn't serve any purpose other than to give the illusion of some greater meaning; story was thin. Overall, self-conscious Oscar-bait.

I did see Out of the Furnace which took me by surprise. I'd avoided it based on lukewarm reviews and not hearing much else about it but I thought it was a very beautiful film. Solid acting and very touching, considering the bleakness of the storyline.

  • Spy is definitely worth a watch.

  • finally saw The Hateful 8 last night. first Tarantino I have seen at the cinema since Pulp Fiction.

i am going to say it is his best film to date. gave me the kind of buzz that Star Wars gave me with the nod to elements from the original Tarantino films.

great performances from Goggins, Jason Leigh and Samuel L.

  • won't be watching The Revenant. snow overload. and the prospect of watching a man fight a bear does absolutely nothing for me.

  • Tom and Jerry live action, indeed!

  • the prospect of watching a man fight a bear does absolutely nothing for me

    So much this. Sounds tedious.

  • I'm assuming it was established on this thread a while ago that the new star wars is shit. I knew it wasn't going to be heavy intellectual stuff but fucking hell that was limp. It was like a bad spoof of itself.

  • It was like a bad spoof of itself.

absofuckinglutely that's what I said when I came out - like a tribute act

  • Its a loose remake to get new fans, but with so many nods to ANH it alienates new fans.

  • I've totally changed my mind on The Revenant - when the trailer came out I was a bit 'meh' but saw it last night and thought it was great. Especially considering how the production and direction had so many challenges - only natural light (bar one scene), shooting chronologically, scene actions being mostly improvised, and Leo having to eat a bison liver despite being vegetarian, hardcore. Visually it's stunning, but I'm a sucker for incredibly long shots of landscapes and trees.

Maybe it was a touch too long, definitely felt one too many 'go to sleep, wake up' scenes but aside from that, 5/7.

  • I was more bored reading the first half of that article than i was watching Star Wars.

Also, this sentence: "As Turner puts, epic is “already postmodern”, insomuch as it’s voraciously macrophagic." made me want to bludgeon the author to death.

  • true - he makes a good point about the threat of the empire shizzle having less cultural impact than post cold war

  • My friend Julie Carter and I have made a ghost film, More Or Less Cracked, exploring the true story of a scientist who lost his son in WW1 and experiences strange communications from beyond the grave. We are in the post production stage and have set up a FB page which you're welcome to 'like' https://www.facebook.com/moreorlesscracked/

I'll post the trailer here when it's done and info regarding screenings shortly

  • Watching Half Nelson. The whole thing is very unsettling so I'm retreating to my phone.

I'm going to lay off the crack I think, it doesn't seem to be very good for the quality of your teaching.

  • How are your troubled gazes coming along?

  • That's what I'm struggling with, but I'm nailing insouciant wearing of ties and long, rambling explanations of dialectics to nonplussed thirteen year olds.

  • I'm going to watch Rumblefish tonight. Never seen it.

@NurseHolliday Serpico! Nice one for making a point of seeing it. Love that film. Next up Dog Day Afternoon (if you haven't seen it already).
