If you want to run a disc brake, then you want the caliper to move with the wheel axle, which the Paragon sliding or rocking dropouts achieve. Other than that, I can't think of any major benefit. But if you're running SS rather than fixed, I can't see any benefit.

Does anyone know what I nee or have a link? the originals suck.
Measure the originals, I think they're M5x20. What aspect of them.do you find sucky?
-
• #73629
That's what I thought, thanks. Even if you did run discs, the chain tensioner means the wheel doesn't move when switching gear ratios so it's not a problem....it's just a bit ugly

If you're going custom you'd probably want the bike to look nice at the end...
If SSCX/mtb: to avoid it getting clogged up with mud and ripping itself off.

Anyone know what size of bolt I need for a G Sport Homer/Vandal hub?
I
knowthink it's 9/16" in diameter but I don't know the thread pitch.I know it's finer than 1.5 but coarser than 1.25 or vice versa. I think it'll be UNF but hoping someone like @mdcc_tester with an encyclopedic knowledge of such things can confirm for me.
Bolt head is between 20 and 21mm if that helps.

• #73632
in that case, are there rocker dropouts with replaceable rd hangers?
-
• #73633
If you bend the RD hanger, you just buy a new insert for the rocker dropout. They're only $15 from Paragon.

• #73634
ok, thank you

Marmoset was 3/8" 24tpi
I did replace a Homer and a Vandal bolt at some stages in my life but I can't remember the pitches. You should be able to just take the wheel into a hardware store and try out bolts, I remember that was one of the USPs on the adverts for the Homer and Vandal hubs, that rather than having to replace a costly axle you could use any bolts from the hardware store.

• #73636
Yeah, I was gonna swing by the hardware store on my way to work but left my wallet at home so was thinking I could order online. I'll maybe just go tomorrow.
I seem to remember that George designed them to take a regular bolt but very little info on what that bolt actually is.
Ah, I've just found a chart that tells me the tpi of 9/16 UNF is 18 and I've seen 9/16 - 18 as a reference for the Vandal/Homer bolts so I think that confirms that they are UNF.
Cheers.

On a related note, who makes decent frames these days? I've been thinking of building a BMX up again after I got rid of mine a few years back. If I don't ride too much street I might not fuck my back up again.

No idea, I'm riding a Fit Series 1!
Think my mates ride BSDs.
-
• #73640
Cheers, I was hoping that someone would be able to figure something out from my comparison to metric pitches so that's reassuring.
-
• #73641

The rest of the world has been using ISO metric fasteners for decades, so I don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of 'merkin threads which should have been consigned to history before I was even born :-)

Fairy nuff.
I think there was a thing about how George (guy that designed the hub) went to his local hardware store to get a bolt to design around only his local hardware store was run and frequented by guys that were into restoring american motors or something so the bolts he designed around aren't actually all that common in the UK after all. Lol.

Are there any black rims with a black brake track that doesn't wear to silver?
Asking for a friend, I ride brakeless. Obvs.

Are there any black rims with a black brake track that doesn't wear to silver?
Any carbon fibre rim

No alu options with some special through-colour space shuttle treatment?
-
• #73646
Nein. Best case you simply delay the point at which the silver comes through.
-
• #73647
Carbon then.
Just need to spend a few hours trawling the orient express thread to work out the best supplier. :(
-
• #73648
Now that's sorted I need a UK source for Dura Ace 7600 high flange hubs in 28H.
Ebay can sell me some but they seem to be from Japan via Australia or something.

I keep breaking cheap shitty floor pumps so I want to buy a proper one which will last. What's a good floor pump that won't break the bank?
-
• #73650
My lezyne has been amazing. Lasted years. Still going strong. £30
Is there any reason why, on a custom frame, you would run paragon slider or rocker dropouts rather than running a chain tensioner with standard dropouts. Assuming you're not going to run the bike fixed, do they provide any advantage over a basic ss covertor chain tensioner?
ie, why this
over
other than aesthetics? (ignore the disc brake mount)
