That's why I used a section of tubular tyre - flexible enough to conform to the shape of the tyre but totally unwilling to deform as an inner tube patch would, and therefore herniate out through the cut. Standard vulcanising solution (after cleaning everything with acetone) seems to have done the trick, also.
