I guess this is as good a place as any...
Following 2 years thinking it over I'm stopping my current mind-numbing career in insurance and pursuing plumbing. I have little direct experience but enough around the fringes to be ludicrously excited enough to commit to it. I'll start college in September to get the level 2 diploma, hopefully South Thames (Wandsworth High Street) but if not I've got a place at Lambeth (Vauxhall/Stockwell).
SALES PITCH: Will be FUNemployed from 1 June, and am keen to find a labourers job to get experience before college. I know I'll be more of a hindrance than a help for a couple of weeks but am happy to do whatever rubbish tasks are available in exchange for basically watching someone work.
Can anyone help? pretty please?

After too long procrastinating I'm pulling the trigger on a new Bathroom. I'm going to keep it simple otherwise I'd take another 2 years to sort...
Folks on here I've asked can't do it. Anyone new able to? Or know of someone good? I would need it done in a month to 6 weeks. -

Hey guys, can anyone help with choosing a combi boiler?
There's a mind-boggling range to choose from. How do I start?
We've got a 4 bedroom house over three floors. I guess I want the same thing that most people do, energy efficient, reliable and not going to cost the earth.
Our plumber recommended a Ideal logic plus 30kw boiler.
Any advice is appreciated. -

how many bathrooms?

Just one.

Worth considering at this stage if you would ever add another bathroom, if so you may consider other options.
Every installer has their own preference however and some would prefer to supply the boiler. If the installer is accredited by the manufacturer that may increase the Warranty period.
Ideals are ok, my personal preference is Vaillant.

Whatever you go for, be sure to use a GasSafe registered engineer. A good installer will assess the property and advise accordingly.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm happy with the installer and can't see us adding another bathroom, so I think I'll go with his recommendation.
He has said that there is a seven year guarantee for the boiler so they must have faith in the product. -

Anyone with electric shower knowledge?
Ours has gone a bit lacklustre, less heat and pressure than there used to be.
I've checked all the obvious things, shower head for clogging, inlet filter for clogging, supply pressure etc.
When we moved in at first it went through a few isolator switches until I realised that the one fitted when we moved in had been too low rated and I'd been replacing with the same.
I think the heater can may be going? As you turn the heat dial up the pressure drops, even when set to cold mode where the heat dial does nothing. I'm thinking the heater isn't working as good as it should be so we are turning the dial up, resulting in drop in pressure.
New heater can can be had for just over £40 which is about half the price of a replacement shower plus would mean I don't need to worry about the water inlet and power connections being in a different place and having to fuck around with rerouting those.
Just thought I'd check and see if anyone had any other suggestions before I buy.

It's London so I assume the element just scales up over time. I think you can descale them but it's a faff and if you screw up it might kill you a bit
-

Ah, no. I'm in Glasgow so probably means I get better water? I take it it would be this heater part that'd scale up anyway?

The building manager has asked us to vent our radiators. Mine are old cast iron ones without a regular air vent. Is it just a matter of taking a fitting wrench and carefully loosening this:

I have just moved and found a small gas leak from a badly soldered pipe. I checked the Gas Safe register and found a plumber on my street, who came out this evening and soldered in a new joint. Because we are neighbours he was very relaxed about payment and told me to bring round whatever I like tomorrow evening - would anyone be able to suggest a fair price for this job? He was here an hour.

£50?

Sounds right

Looks like this has been happily dribbling under the bathroom sink for probably a year.
What size are these things or should I just buy two mole-grips and crank away?

Adjustable wrench?
-
• #124
Those tap tails have a rubber washer inside, no ptfe required. Nipping it up with an adjustable wrench or pipe pliers should do the job.

Nice one. I have two adjustable spanners but the in laws have borrowed them.
Excellent. :-)
