Well after selling my Mk1 Gti a few months ago after realising it just wasn't the kind of example I wanted to hold on to, I can't stop thinking about investing in a little 106 Rallye. Ive never owned a Peugeot before, only ever classic Fords and VW's. But I hear the original 1.3 is fantastic to drive. It really doesn't have the looks or classic appeal as the Mk1 and at 25 I'm not sure I'd ever want to be seen driving a white 106 with white wheels.
Does anyone have experience with Rallye Peugeots?
For reference the Golf..

Naturally I agree, but this particular example just work perfectly well, especially with the side strip.

Do it. Go really hard into a corner and lift of off mid way*
They're excellent. never driven one as they didn't have them in Aus, but the 205 GTi I drove was a very much more lively car than the Mk1 GTi
The white one depicted looks particularly good.
*Don't do this.

Rly. Don't.
When I got my 205 1.9 GTi aged 20 I was aware of this reputation, but figured it couldn't possibly be as bad as people said so went barrelling into a roundabout, done a big lift and ended up sitting on the grass in the middle of the roundabout. Fun it was.
I've always fancied a 106 Rallye. I'm sure I remember the 1.3 being the one to have over the 1.6 but I can't remember why.

LFGSS; crashing cars cause it look cool.

Lift off over steer.
MK1 gti wasn't that great IMO there were lots of similar faster cars and better handling cars but the mk1 gti car became iconic of an era/the uk.

The 205 rallye was a 1.3 2valve per cyclinder 100bhp 7k reving car while the 106 developed a bit less power from a similar 1.3 engine. Didn't the later rallye have a 1.6 engine similar bhp but peak torque was around 3 while peak torque was around 5 on the 1.3
Rally cars are different to race cars as rally cars need suspension travel to cope with the terrain and from experience shorter gearing as rally cars spend less time going on a straight line.

ISTR the euro 205 Rallye was good, but we got a shit version. Or something. I may be getting confused.
-
• #26194
I'm not - Wikipedia says only mainland Yerp got the proper Rallye, we got a rebadged XT in 1994.

I've come to realise my village is some sort of car nut hotbed
Guy up the road has a 205 1.9 GTi on his drive although it hasn't moved for months (years?)
My son's friend's Dad has a series 2 Landy he is slowly restoring.
Guys over the road just moved in have a trackday MX5
At the top of the hill there's a guy with a Bay Window in his garage (again "undergoing restoration"...)
At the bottom of the hill there is an E46 M3 in dark blue that is immaculate, daily driver as well
And I met a really nice young lad who just bought himself a Volvo 240 estate for £200.... already lowered :-) -

I did the same, except in a 306 - I was used to the lift off effect as I had driven my older 306 on a few track days etc. and explored the gallic handling.
Skip to a test drive of a newer GTi6 that was in a dealership for months - went for a drive, hard round a corner - shit these tyres are rock hard - shit - massive understeer, no probs, a little lift will sort that - shit shit shit TANK SLAPPER, manage to correct (after over correcting) and nearly into a power pole. Was not fun.
Still bought the car.

Why do I suddenly want a GTV6?

I believe it to be a recurring thread that runs through our lives, resurfacing strongly from time to time. It could have been triggered by something quite innocuous like a panini?
