Dynamo hubs

  • Great summary. Thanks.

I'd kind of decided on the Sinewave if I was to get another road bike for bikepacking type stuff so that I could swap the whole setup onto my TT bike for longer audaxes or TT training. But then I could always just get two Plugs and really, if I'm training for ultra stuff and DO get a new bike then maybe I'll retire the Stealth TT bike anyway as I should be spending my time on the new bike.

Do the Plug III bungs or whatever work ok with carbon steerer tubes?

  • Almost certain it comes with a compression plug and bolts onto that like a stem cap would. Pretty sure they ran one on some Whiskey 29er forks, seem to remember them drilling a little hole near the crown but that was for the cable routing rather than function.

  • I've got a SON wheel (in Mavic Open Pro) in SW15 if you want to borrow that to try out @hippy

I put my IQ Fly on my commuting bike and don't have any other dynamo lights so I've no idea when I'm going to need the wheel again.

[EDIT] Ah, you were talking about lights. Still, you're welcome to borrow the wheel.

  • @coldharbour couldn't get a plug 3 on my easton ec90xd due it's expander bung having no holes to get the cables through

  • South London mate.

  • Has anyone serviced SP Pd-8 disk dynamo hubs?
I can find any info on bearing online.

  • Mine's gone back to Ison and they're sorting it, pretty sure all servicing is done by SP themselves...

  • Darny!
I guess I will drop them an email.

  • Cheers @Greenbank. I need to sort out a bike first and then buy a dynamo setup to suit it. Probably should start hassling @scherrit about fitting clip-ons to my road bike or something similar.

  • I thought the Plug had its own bung?

  • The easton ec90xd is uses a weird threaded thing, rather than an expander

  • Ah, right.

Note to self, don't buy Easton forks.

  • Mine use a bung.

  • SJS just emailed a deal through...

Here’s a one off deal to keep you going through these long winter days!

A top quality headlamp powered by a hub dynamo, ultimately allowing you to not only light your way to and from the pub more effectively, but also to convert the energy from the beer you drink to lifesaving light power!!!
    *If you order this headlamp:

    @ ONLY £64.99 (RRP £135.00!)
(Please note this headlamp does not have a feed for a rear light.)
*You can add ANY dynohub from here.

*Along with any rim of your choice (do select the same number of holes as the hub!) from here.
*And this super discounted wheel build @ just £9.99 here.

If you want to order a rear wheel at the same time (can’t be later for this price) then select 2 of these offer builds plus the relevant rim and hub.

  • £9.99 wheel build >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • Are you of the impression it means they only tension half the spokes or something?

  • I doubt they'll be anything wrong with it, it's just the notion of a "super discounted wheel build". Makes me think of some sub-human thing in the back of the workshop doing their first few wheelbuilds to learn on the job. Discount the hub or the rim as they're just a thing and can't really be fucked up, but a wheel build is something I wouldn't like to think has been skimped on (I doubt it will be).

No experience of SJS wheel builds. My various SON wheels from Bike+ where top notch, Condor rear fixed wheels have been 50:50 (one was spot on the other loosey-goosey). My now closed down LBS (W.F.Holdsworth) was good too.

  • would this heavily discounted alfine dynamo hub, be worth the cash as it's only pushing out 1.5w?
Instead of the 3W that the other hubs are?

  • My advice would be the Edelux II, then Supernova.

  • I had my dynamo wheel built by justridingalong.

    Great service and fair cost.

And in maybe 25,000 miles. Not a single issue to re tension needed.

With regards to lights and dynamo. Think about the amount of time your riding in the dark? If it's not long, a battery powered light might do... Also will you be charging from the dynamo or from stops? Or batteries for etrex.

Losing 5W to a dynamo is a fair amount when only doing 140w.

  • It's more than just lighting. It's the ability to charge my Garmin, phone, etc.

I'm also tired of riding around with lights on low power worried it's going to run out, carrying loads of spare lights and batteries for the same reason. If I don't need the power I can switch off the dynamo reducing its load and as for only doing 140W, I don't get out of bed for less than 200.

TransAm record is 17.5 days - you think battery lights are practical for that duration? I don't. Maybe if I was touring and stopping in a hotel every night it would be ok but that's unlikely.

  • Yeah. I often forgot to recharge my di2 when training, no issue, just charge and ride! And I have my lights on every time training as dynamo. So I agree, lots of nice benefits.

And wait and see. I could only manage 90w average one day!

I mentioned it because I know Mike ran battery powered lights and etrex for transam.

  • I think I am looking at other German offering first and foremost (I can't recall its name). It doesn't look as good but seems to be a more reliable product from what I've read. Uses the same lens as the Edelux I think.

  • Didn't even think about Di2 - that's another thing I'd need to charge if I was using it.

Mike ran batteries? Where was he charging them? All those post offices he slept in?

  • Carried a spare Di2 battery. "Any major bike issues?" answer here http://bikepackersmagazine.com/mike-hall/
