I grew up in a city that organises a carnival every year which also produces inordinate amounts of rubbish. I was always baffled by the newspaper articles that showed council workers pushing heaps of it with their brooms. This didn't remind me of that, though, I just liked the composition of the picture and how the different elements work together quite fortuitously.
At NYE in 1999/2000, I was working for Westminster council. A mate in the recycling team told me that they picked up 15 tonnes of green glass (mostly champagne bottles) from the west end alone.
