Getting a little bit closer to trying to secure a deal on now what looks to be a pair of C40s but hoping for some forum help to clear up a query I have. Does anybody recognise this fork?

Thank you. Aftermarket addition so the frame can be used fixed/SS.

hey guys so a little update on the frame I've purchased. Turns out it weighs about 1.8g, which as far as I know should indicate Mexico status, as I think the Supers are more than 2 (correct me if I'm wrong). Bit confused by this as Saarf indicated he thinks no mexicos had crimped chainstays, and this one seems to. Seems there really is no rhyme or reason to these late 70s & early-mid 80s Colnago frames, often sharing and swapping characteristics of each. Lovely stuff regardless!

"Basically the Merckx Colnago Mexicos (1974-1979) had round superlight main tubes, Sarroni Nuovo Mexicos (1980-1985) crimped top and down tubes, ESA Mexicos (1986-1988) had 6 ribs on main tubes, Zoetemelk Mexico SR/CRs (1985-1986) had a crimped top tube with a 4 rib downtube. FYI: Master with 4 ribs, Tecnos with 5 ribs, Conic with 8 ribs, and Regal (ESA Mexico w/Arabesque lugs) with 6 ribs. The visible difference between 1974-'79 Mexico and 1974-'79 Super is that the Mexico has chainstays that are not crimped at all (round-oval-round). FYI: Masi (round-D-round), De Rosa (round-diamond-round). Note that the timelines are for the USA."

the forks are not Colnago, Mexico decal looks like it's been added later, if
you go by the above article, it must be an early 80's Super frame -
• #1364
mexico decal has indeed been added later, as it's been restored. forks are not colnago, nope, they're columbus NOS w campy dropouts
what do you say re the 1.8 weight then Saarf? pretty sure the supers are all above 2kg
-
• #1365
i read some where mexicos were just under 1.8 , who knows for sure
only real way to confirm weights is against factory specs, eg catalogs
people can write anything on the web -
• #1367
Is that including the fork? I recently weighed mine, which I believe is an early 80s super (with fork), and it weighed just a few grams under 2 kg.
-
• #1369
i;d say it's a super
-
• #1370
even though it weighs what a mexico should weigh? or based purely on the chainstay theory?
either way I'm all good, happy as a clam with this frame. bloody beaut

• #1371
the lower rear stays have a crimp/groove on the inside plus the wording COLNAGO inscribed could contribute to the frame being a MEXICO?
-
• #1372
I think that is also true. don't think the Supers had both this inscription and the interior groove along the stays
-
• #1373
no mexico has interior stay grooves, the weight is of the frame, with original forks it would be more than 1.8kg
super frame and forks 2kg
mexico frame and forks 1.85kg
"It has been noted that there have been fake Merckx Mexicos which were actually Supers with chainstay crimps being filled in with automotive body filler and repainted. Repainted frames are usually fakes, damaged, or undocumented originals. Always start with the fake frame and let the seller prove it is real or undamaged and that it is not stolen." -

super frame and forks 2kg
mexico frame and forks 1.85kgThese must be the weights for frame only. The Super is Columbus SL which is around 2,000g for a frame. So the Mexicos are of thinner gauge tubing than SL?
-
• #1375
weights must be for f&f , as you say, you weighed yours at 2kg, think mexicos would have thinner gauge tubing
also the frame in question is early eighties, the only mexico then was the nuovo mexico, which had crimped tt and dt
