I have posh long and short sleeve merino base layers already. That's one area of clothing I've actually spent decent money on in the last 5 years.

"it packs down small enough to fit into a jersey pocket." = useful, but if I'm wearing a jacket for the whole ride because it's 5degC all day and night..
Well, if there's black ice risk I'll not be out or I'll be riding very cautiously. It's a bit tricky to choose something if you are alone for 24hrs+. I guess the main thing is whatever I get it has to keep me warm. Being wet doesn't matter if I'm warm.
