You might need to adjust the indexing for the slightly wider cage you'll have but I can't see it's essential.

Nah I think you'll be ok. Looking at mine I think it's there to make it quieter if your chain is rubbing. I think re indexing the gears should be ok. I do have a 5800 front mech spare if you wanted to buy one if it doesn't work. It's a clamp on but I can't see why you couldn't swap the plastic bit over. Looks pretty simple.

Doubt you'll need to re-index.
Replacements exist. It's called a rub plate I think.

Found it, it's called a skid plate in case anyone's interested
The small piece of black rubber on my 5800 105 front derailleur has a ripped and is now rubbing off my chain. Can I discard the rubber bit and move on or do I need to replace it?
