  • So... the building is catered. Because they cannot verify who eats and who does not (it's all self serve in kitchen) it was a choice of everyone pays or they cancel having the food. It's not a massive cost ( ~$25 every 2 weeks after tax ).

    If we had a proper canteen then it would be on what you actually consumed/took.

  • Seriously though, can they do that? How can you be forced to opt-in to some work canteen?
    It might be good value or whatever but it still sounds like bullshit on their part to me.

  • Well, originally it was totally free. Then we were bought by another company who have a policy that you have to declare it to the Gov for tax reasons.

    The new companies argument was, you can always quit (welcome to America). On the plus side, they gave us bonuses etc... so I am making 20% more than I was before they bought the company. Hence no one really has argued about paying for the food.
