That said, I don't think the extent of the oilfields was much appreciated back then. Moreover, from Thatcher's point of view, it was more a matter of pride and moral obligation. I don't think Thatcher was really motivated by whether or not she was perceived as being popular. Reagan, and most of our allies, tried to persuade her against going to war, don't you know - the US refused us the use or airbases that would allow us to operate F-4 Phantoms.
Falklands oilfields, the U.K. Economy being knackered, and Thatcher's domestic unpopularity, were all factors suggesting self interest there too.
