  • No one could have idolised McCullin more than I did, from when I was 14 or 15 and got one of his books for the first time. Brave, dedicated, and so very good looking he was the ideal war photographer. He was one of the greats. But he's also become a bore. A bit like Stephen Roche talking about modern day cycling. McCullin has talked too much about how the misery he has seen has affected him, it's rather tasteless and his peers refrain from it. His comments about digital are just curmudgeonly.
He'a a complex character and has led a worthwhile life but it pains me to read his interviews nowadays.

  • He's talking specifically about falsification of digital press images, and I seem to remember a lot of cases of this occurring, even though I hardly pay attention to that stuff. Or does it no longer happen?

  • There have been remarkably few cases of photojournalists getting caught out and agencies and newspapers are actually really, really strict about it. There's no reason to think it is routinely happening. McCullin is 80 and set in his ways. He'd fit right in over on the other photography thread. I imagine all the photographers whose integrity he is impugning will forgive him because of what he has achieved.

  • Snowy today up my way, winter tyres and 4wd means we took the less traveled roads and found some nice snow covered trees.

  • I've decided to downgrade to a smaller camera, I'm leaning towards getting a Ricoh GR 1 or 2, is the general consencous that it is very good? Anything else I should consider?

If anyone is interested in a 5D3 I'll be selling it shortly, along with my 50 1.4 and 28 2.8. I'd be after £1100 for the body. PM me for details

  • I have a GR that I may want to let go of, depending on if I go back to a GXR w/50mm lensor. For something in excellent shape, what would be a fair price?

  • Hello all, sorry for the spam, but my journal is running a photo contest, top prize $US 250 and featured on the cover. The catch? It's got to be related to haematology or haematology-oncology, but just putting this out there is anyone might be interested.

  • Leica M, Sony A7, Ricoh GXR. It's a big step down otherwise, are you sure you're ready for the shutter and start up lag on a that small a camera. If you don't mind that kind of thing then a Leica X2 is also an option.

  • Let me know if you do, from looking at eBay prices I'd probably offer you something around £270-280.

  • Would love a Leica M but out of my price range. Really considered the Sony a7 but could really decide whether I liked it or not.

What really draws me to the Ricoh is its small size, can easily go in my pocket. I understand that it will be different but my current uses aren't very demanding, the majority is recording and documenting project work at uni. With the occasional street shooting session.

Is it worth considering the x100s/t too? Always heard good things about these.

  • X100 feels a lot more like a 'proper' camera because of the ergonomics. Although I think the GR ergonomics are also great. Colour rendition is great, IMHO better than the GR (which is already pretty good, although it's grainy at higher ISOs). GR's a lot cheaper though - you pay for the finder and all the other refinements on the X100.

  • which model are you looking at letting go?

  • The little cameras can get a lot done shooting street if you have the settings right, lens out, ready to go. You need zone focus and the smaller sensor limits depth of field.

Personally I couldn't get on with it. Too much lag, autofocus too slow. Great if you have limited space/weight and are prepared to shoot in a way the camera dictates.

If you are considering the A7 you should try one of it's guises. I had one to trial and only didn't keep it because I had something very marginally more my thing. I still think about getting one though. It's probably the sweet spot in terms of current camera tech.

  • Thinking of selling my GR.

  • Will do, I'll probably have a think over the next week or so.

  • Ayup guys,

Basically, long story short I just got a Ricoh GRD IV second hand camera in the post and I'm pretty sure there is a focusing issue with it, It doesn't seem to want to focus on anything whilst in auto beyond 4 feet away, unless it is on subjective tracking. It will focus on things close up but wont focus on anything else even when on Multi AF or Spot AF. I've noticed that f is always staying on 1.9.

The weird thing is subjective tracking seems better and focussed and then after I have shot in subjective tracking even when I put it back to AF it seems fine for a moment but when turned off its back to its un-focused self.

Macro isn't on, and I have re-set the settings. Im a bit confused as to what might be up, I think maybe its a case of a faulty camera.

Its a longshot but I was wandering if anyone has any idea whats happening or any advice really?

  • .....annnnnnnnnnnd The case is closed, taken it into a shop to see 'a man' and its kaput apparently. Anyone selling a Ricoh GRD 3 or 4?

  • .
