Android phones, apps and tablets

  • I use Lastpass on computer and phone. It's a browser add-in so works fine on Windows or Linux which I use it on.

The mobile version is $10-$15 per year. You can log in and view/copy usernames and passwords or it autofills into the browser and apps (although it's a bit erratic as to when that works).

There is a web version, although as I have two factor authentication turned on I need my phone to log in anyway so I don't use that.

  • logmein had a similar solution, and in their history they changed ownership and went nuts about monetisation in a way that really compromised the user experience, turning a very good product into a very bad product.

There are fears that now that logmein have purchased LastPass that they will put up the price and offer a shitty set of "improvements" to the product that ultimately will render it unusable.

The thing is... these are fears, it hasn't happened. And why would it happen? What benefit is there to logmein to spend so much acquiring LastPass just to lose the subscriber base?

It is trivial for you to export all of your passwords, and they are no less secure now that they've been acquired. So it's good for now, and if LastPass fuck it up then it's really easy to move to someone else.

Some of my colleagues prefer https://agilebits.com/onepassword but the feature set isn't quite there for Android users at the moment, and for me personally the lack of native Linux precludes it. So there are other options.

  • Nice one

From my recent reading I believe the mobile version is free now but you can only sync across mobile devices and if you use the desktop version you can only sync across desktops and/or tablets

Just having a play around with the free version of Dashlane before I decide, seems quite decent

  • I'm paying, but that's only because I've been paying for ages and the value is there for me.

    I think it's worth it.

  • Thanks that clears a lot up

1password is the one other I was looking at along with Dashlane, will probably have a little tinker with the free version though as you say the android feature set does seem lacking in comparison and I will definitely be using it on my phone

  • Does anyone have a Nexus 5X? Any good?

I'm considering an upgrade on my Nexus 5. Specs-wise it hardly seems worth it apart from the camera and the fingerprint unlock

  • They'd take feature requests though, right? Might mention it to them.

  • I am really paranoid regarding passwords. I use lastpass (premium) for things I don't overly care about (amazon, etc...). For banking or anything financial (and email) these live in Keepass. Which is a bit of a pain so I keep the file on my google drive. Generally though I only use one computer for these things

  • Cyanogenmod 13 nightlies released. Tried it on my OPO. Worked OK except no mobile data so I reverted to my 12.1 nightlies. Promising though!

  • Wow, changing phones is waaaay easier than a few years ago. Before I'd have to use about 6 separate apps to migrate various data across, re setup a load of settings from scratch, etc. and then wait a good week or so before factory resetting the old one just in case I had forgotten something. Now during the new phone setup process you just put the two phones next to each other and it just sends all the stuff over wifi.

  • finally got round to rooting my Galaxy Tab 3 8" and flashed with slimkats ROM - has cured the appalling battery drain on Wifi and got rid of all that Samsung sludge - loads better

  • Moto Play X rooted and set up. Was planning to leave stock but after discovering that a variety of my tasker scripts don't work, you can't install adaway and, worst of all, you can't restrict permissions without doing so then it left me no choice.

Pretty straightforward to root but with an interesting slant in that you have to log into the motorola website to get an unlock code at which point you have to agree that it voids the warranty.

Touching the two together to copy stuff over didn't seem to work (not sure if it was due to one being on Marshmallow or them being rooted). I'd already backed up everything on titanium backup though so restoring was simple.

Phone itself seems nice for the price. Slightly too big at the moment, will have to try and get used to that. Fits in a pocket ok.

  • The Wileyfox Swift is £99 today. Any thoughts? I could use a new phone to replace my Note 2. Is this a good choice?

  • Hmm, I'd been considering one of those instead of a Moto 4G. Lots of the reviews mention GPS issues though and the support isn't supposed to be very good if you have problems.

  • Couple of questions:

What do people recommend for transferring text messages from one phone to another. Titanium backup does it but seems to sort them into a weird order, SMS backup & restore sometimes works, sometimes misses SMSs, sometimes duplicates them. SMS Backup + seemed to assign strange senders to some of the texts (the sender & receiver get concatenated).

Any other suggestions? I have about 18,000 texts which could be part of the issue.

Also, I'm missing the flashing LED from my old phone which indicates texts, missed calls, etc. Any alternatives to get some kind of similar functionality? I tried NoLED but I had trouble getting off the lockscreen with it. Something of that nature would be good though.

  • One of the best things about a new phone is getting rid of all that old shit.

  • Super backup has always worked faultlessly for me. Never tried it with 18000 messages though!

  • Gotta keep them sexts.

  • I know you said it didn't work for you but Moto Migrate worked fine for me. I was dreading going what you are going through as that was my experience last time. IIrc I used sms backup plus but did it in batches of 500 and that seemed to stop any weirdness happening, that was for about 5k texts though and took a while, 18k might be too much.

I believe Lightflow is what you're after

  • One of the best things about a new phone is getting rid of all that old shit.

    totally

  • I may give superbackup a try. The Moto migrate doesn't work with Marshmallow which is what my old phone was on. To be honest I have no idea what most of those texts are, I could probably delete 95% but I can't be arsed working out the ones I do want.

I thought Lightflow only controlled the LED, the phone doesn't have an LED.

  • Apparently it does have an LED, it's just not used for some reason.

  • Ah bugger it seems you're right. When I 1st plugged the charger in, a white led above the earpiece lit up and I assumed that was the notification led, turns out it's just a low batt light :( that's thrown me a bit I'm very used to my old Lightflow setup

  • I'm quite impressed with active display though so it might not matter too much. Undecided as to whether I like the trend of lockscreens not actually locking shit any more though, have made quite a few pocket calls or garbled pocket texts in the last year, managed to change some settings too once which really pissed me off
