Re max spacers I recall 1 inch for 1 inch steerer is a good rule of thumb.
ie 25mm.
l see the tandem is still hanging up in Vaz! -

is there a maximum recommended amount of carbon steerer above headset, beyond which it could crack and I end up my face on the ground?
The limit for spacers above the stem is knocking your teeth out on the top cap. The steerer won't break unless you hit it with such force that it is the least of your worries.

l see the tandem is still hanging up in Vaz!Noted for spacers. Got more at the moment but it's just a first fix, not ridden yet (won't be a while, so much to sort out on that bike...)
Re tandem: I hope it doesn't make you feel bad... Let's call it a long term project... But I haven't forgotten about it!

Genesis Tarn 20 or Salsa Pony Rustler?
I'm unfit and a danger to myself on the trails. Currently on a one size too small Cotic Solaris.

Noted for spacers. Got more at the moment
Columbus seem reluctant to provide proper instructions, but most fork manufacturers seem to have settled on about 50mm of spacers between headset and stem as a maximum. It's very much guesswork on their part if they don't know the length and angle of the stem and the reach and loading of the handlebar. These two are going to impose very different loads on their respective steerers :-)

My friend has asked me which child's bike she should buy for her 3 year old son.
Any ideas? -

If I wanted to buy nice brown wood or fake horn buttons for a girls double brested felt like jacket, what sort of size should I be looking for?
Any particular type that you'd suggest?
Thanks!

Islabike or Frog. Get the smallest they do, he'll out grow it quickly but he'll learn quicker on a bike that is the right kind of size for him.
The Islabike will retain most of it's value so your friend will be able to recoup 75% of the original outlay later, assuming it remains in good condition. Frog are relatively new but have a similar build quality to Islabikes, but as yet it's not clear if they retain that resale value.

No bad feelings.
The frames yours to do what you want with it :) -

Thanks for this.
In my case stem is quite short (90 mm), and without cutting steerer I have less that 50mm spacers due to tall head tube / big frame. -

If final diagnosis is that it can be saved and ridden (Winston only confirmed so far that forks were salvageable), this will be refurbished and ridden!

My friend has asked me which child's bike she should buy for her 3 year old son.
How big is the boy, and how skilled? One of my 3 year old nephews doesn't ride but is huge and could easily fit a Cnoc 14", the other one has mad skillz on a Rothan and still has plenty of growth room on it.

Tagua nut seems to be the go to for those avoiding real horn buttons.
Let the tailor decide on the size. -

Does anyone know where I could get hold of a 1 1/4" threaded headset for a 1992 Canondale M700? Thanks.

1 1/4" threaded headset
Chris King? Don't know whether the stack height works, but they do actually make 1.25" threaded headsets, both 2-nut and Gripnut versions.

Did this get sorted?
If i have multiple docs I combine them in a pdf and save them on the desktop, then I can just right click the icon and print from that menu. PDFs always come out in the same format. -

If I wanted to start playing around with Adobe Illustrator, is there a version that is so old it is now free, but not so old that it isn't decent to use?
Or is my only option to start paying a monthly subscription to Adobe for the latest and greatest edition?

No tailor. Just sewing skillz.

Anyone know what the correct name for this is and where to buy one?

It will. If it's used by multiple people, etc then you may want to set up a dummy Word file that contains the autostarting macro to open the actual file, print it and close everything.
