I believe some of the obstacles weren't robust enough.

It was a combination of things - rain making the flag stones really slippy, the obstacles not having enough grip or being built particularly well, and delays to the course caused by a number of things including the risk assessor being caught up with the Paris awfulness.

there was a lot of hammering still being done (to some pretty flimsy-looking obstacles) when I rolled up at 11. Maybe Imperial College next year and some engineering students?

They had to move everything around due to the weather - originally the stands etc weren't going to be under the covered bit by Waitrose, they were going to be by the start line where all the portaloos were.
And yeah, getting art students to build solid and practical obstacles. Hmm.

LOL at art students making stuff that looks pretty but having no understanding of physics.
Could have been worse though, they could have got architecture students to do it....

With Engineering Students it'd be robust enough because it'll be overengineered. Alas it would likely be delivered three months too late and at least 50% over budget along with a request for preferential treatment in subsequent competitive tenders. LSE would be better but, my money would be on CWC as your best option.

Then again, maybe the bikes and riders could have been model-sized, too.

I don't know if you realise this @Oliver Schick but most models although slim in stature lack the cardiovascular fitness to participate in cycle races.
