Rode my second Broken Cross Audax, Venetian Nights 200k, on Saturday. Fantastic route... first half is flat and fast, it gets lumpy for a while then drops down to Matlock (excellent chippy by the river in Matlock Bath). Full of greasy chips it kicks up hard but rewards you with 30km of flat, traffic-free grit and gravel riding along the High Peak Trail. A gentle rise over Axe Edge and you're ready for a fantastic end to the ride as you descend from the Cat and Fiddle into Macclesfield. Got luck and rolled down as the sun was setting and the supermoon rose behind - absolutely stunning!
Two stops at the audax-famous Van of Delights™ too!

I have enough trouble getting my shit together for races, I think I'll leave the murky depths of audax 'wins' well alone for now.

I need some DIY help. I've ridden a couple of DIY by GPS but they were listed Perms in that the routes were already validated. I've been creating my own route which is very close to a listed Perm but one where you need to collect receipts to validate. I understood that you would first submit the route for validation and then ride it after it had been approved. But having read through the DIY by GPS guide http://www.aukweb.net/diy/gps/guide/ it seems that you sort of need to self validate it.
So far, as I understand it, you buy virtual brevet cards, then create a route, then ride it recording your track log, then submit track log along with your virtual brevet. So you don't submit your route in advance. All you submit are the controls for a designated distance you propose to ride. I'm a bit worried that my route won't cover the required distance which is why I've chosen a listed Perm on which to base my route. I've done the Google Maps set to walking thing and that seems to match the distances given on the route sheet but you need to submit these checkpoints along with the date of the ride but what if after I've ridden the ride it comes out 2km short or something? The final distance is 204km which is my route rather than the shortest distance.
What am I missing here?

Let's have a look at your route please and I can explain.

Oh I see. Thanks for this. So it's all about the controls. I played around with the positions a bit and managed to get the distance a bit over the required 200km. The only reason I chose this route was that it was a listed perm and as such I assumed it would be the pre-validated so to speak. It's around 43km to Tonbridge from my house so I'm thinking that I might as well start and finish there if I'm only doing this for myself.
Now the only other question that remains is about the process: when I submit my application I have to submit a list of controls but also a ride date; does that mean my ride will be validated both in terms of distance and completion? Now that I'm clear about the creation of the route this is what I'm confused about now.
It would make sense (to me at least) to get the route validated before actually riding it but then if it's possible to submit the entry the day before the ride then that wouldn't be the case.

OK. Still kind of confusing but this thread on yacf seems to cover most of the questions I have.

Sod it. I'll just go for the trial and error method. Add a good bit of 'buffer' distance to compensate for various software used (ViaMichelin, Autoroute and Google Maps), enter and ride and then submit gps file. If it's under distance I will have had a good training ride but will do the Ditchling Devil again as a back up. Just don't want to collect 'kin receipts.

If that thread doesn't help then drop an email to the DIY organiser, they're very helpful (if a little busy some times).
Will be looking to do a few 200s over the next year as I try and get some miles in the legs for Mersey Roads 24h TT and for the IM Wales cycle (180km but hoping to do it in 6h30-7h30) so eating on the move and minimal stopping.
Definitely doing Brazier's Run 100 (and cycling to the start) in Feb, and Ditchling Devil in June. Before that maybe the Upper Thames (Nov), South of Bucks Winter Warmer (Dec, previous DNF), Willy Warmer (Jan), depends on number of brownie points accrued.

I read a few more threads on yacf and other people asking similar questions. I've put a list of controls to and from my 'town' and using ViaMichelin it comes to 208km using cycling and Google Maps set to walking comes to 205km. That means I'm safe in terms of distance validation as I understand it. The actual route I ride will be that or probably longer.
Can't believe it's actually starting to make sense.

The AGM should be soon, expect the regs to change slightly to compensate for your understanding.

Still worried about being under distance I emailed Paul Stewart to help clarify my understanding of the process. He was very helpful and said that my understanding so far is pretty spot on. Phew. Plus, you can enter a DIY from his website rather than the audax one and put in the gpx file and gmaps url as part of the form. Better still, once you've had a route approved and want to ride it again you don't need to go through the beginning process as it would get a DIYSE number.
A whole new world (que Aladdin music) is opening up. But let's get at least one under my belt first.

Speaking of Paul... he emailed me...
"It is with pleasure that I write on behalf of the AUK Board to let you know that you have won the Dave Lewis Trophy for the AUK individual recording the greatest distance in a 24-hour time trial, for 2015."

Well done!
If you were not going to be at the AGM/Awards dinner, I am sure one of the Willesden can arrange acceptance and delivery of your trophy - Paul is in Chiswick, Martin in Ealing (I can't remember where you are located!), but I am sure something is possible.

Thanks. Do you know where the dinner's at? I'm sure I read about it before but the glance I had of the website didn't reveal it.

14th November in Peterborough.
It's usually a decent weekend. People often ride up on the Friday, dinner and drinking Friday. Social ride saturday morning (nothing massive distance). AGM (may or may not be interesting to people) and then dinner and awards before riding home Sunday. Plenty easy enough just to come up for the Saturday night on the train as well and train home Sunday morning.
It's more about catching up with mates and not being in a rush to carry on (when you cross paths with friends on Audax events and need to be through the control in 10 minutes etc.!).
Talk shit about the season past and what you've got planned for next season etc.

Ah, I will be in the US trying to stay sober long enough to attempt a defense of my 24hr TT title. The 24hr World Record holder Marko Baloh is racing so I'm more likely to be battling Meurig again for minor positions but you never know..

Anyone doing the Chiltern Pub Crawl?
I missed the entry and probably should be doing TT training anyway, just wondering..

I'll be doing the Chilterns Pub Crawl. Just doing maps now. Route looks very similar to the Boat Trip. Forecast says foggy.
My DIY 200 which I rode in mid October has been validated. Only yesterday, so was a bit of nail biter. Two more to go for RRtY.
No that was Luke on his Merckx. I was riding a Condor acciaio.
