My first job paid £5 a week. The commute from Chingford to Pall mall in the dark with those lights used batteries in 3 journeys. The cost of those batteries for those lights in winter amounted to a bit more than I earned. I had to stop on the Lea Bridge road 3 times a week for new ones. I think they were £1.80 or so.
