Talking about different coloured lights. Submarines on the surface display an amber flashing light, once whilst transitting through the scottish islands on the surface the control room watchkeeper reported another submarine on the surface at about 6,000 yards range. Unfortunately for him that put it on goat fell just where a snowplough would be in winter.
30 years later we still take the piss.
