  • Has anybody who uses the Alfine cranks managed to source a replacement crank bolt? If so where!?

  • They're just standard aren't they?

  • Well I thought so at first but spoke to someone at chainreaction who gave me a model no. that I can't find anywhere. I'll buy a standard one and see.

  • I'm using standard single ring bolts on mine having removed the chainguard, assume the standard are just normal double bolts.

  • That's the one - thanks.

  • Oh yeah, in that case it's different to the one on my SLX cranks.

  • They're just standard aren't they?

I think there are two different thread sizes as some of the heavy duty MTB cranks have a thicker wall to the axle, but all the road ones are the same. I put one of these on my 5700 cranks.

  • ^ This.

It's virtually impossible to tell the difference in photos. Best bet would be to go to a well stocked lbs with either the old one or the cranks to ensure you get the right one.

  • I ordered the one from SJS which lists the Alfine as "type A" compatible so should do the job.

  • The bike looks great, and i am thrilled it's working how you want it to. Enjoy the ownership. Now I am off to try and fix my bloody brakes...

The one linked by @Dry lists FC-S501 as a match, but this one which looks like the smaller thread is listed as a match for FC-S500, so the exact choice depends on which version of the Alfine crank you have, the earlier S500 based on the 4500 cranks or the current S501 based on the 4600 cranks.

  • Hello! This is my first post. I am just getting familiar with the il pompino after about a month together. I took my first ride in this pictured configuration yesterday with brand new clement mxp tires. I bought a complete bike that was set up for city street riding and replaced the silly narrow flat handlebar with a Soma Clarence i had on the shelf, fresh mavic open sport rims front 32h shimano 105 qr hub / rear origin8 36h track hub, 22 tooth freewheel to complement the existing 42 tooth crank, pedals donated from my mountain bike, and clement cloud dream grippy tires. I ride this bike For quick trips, for fun rides, and now for riding trails! It is a heck of a lot lighter than my mountain bike or touring/commuting rig! Climbing dirt trails is easier on this bike than my mountain bike as long as the roots aren't too big!

  • Just a thank you to the people on this thread for helping with my first proper build (the Pomp). Great advice and it's a super fun bike. Cheers people!

  • Not a great picture, but you get the idea. I had quite a tough time sorting the rear cable hanger. @amey generously gave me a seatbolt hanger but the one-clamp was too small and the swish surly one is too long for small pomps. Had to go with the unsightly integrated seatclamp.

    It's really fun.

  • Looks good, I'm guessing it is a small? Not just 'smaller'. What brakes did you go for? I'm sure you wrote it down somewhere but, y'know...

  • Yeah it's a Small. I went for Tektro 720s. They are really fucking squeaky. I've tried to toe-in the pads so I'm hoping it will reduce when the anodizing wears off the braking surface.

The first ride out I was on about 70psi. Shit was a bit harsh. I've gone down to 55 and it's a lot more squishy and fun. Is that right? Or am I courting punctures with these? (conti speed kings)

  • Nice! Is that a stock paint colour?

  • The first ride out I was on about 70psi. Shit was a bit harsh

What do you weigh? I only have 75psi up front on my road bike ("28C" tyres which are really only about 27, 100kg rider weight)

  • Nah it was repainted by Seabass Cycles in Peckham. Breton grey I think is the colour - it's nicer IRL

  • I like it. Was thinking something similar if I ever get around to doing mine.

  • I'm about 62kg. I've been running about 80psi on my 700c archetypes on my road bike (I used to run 100-110 on my old rims) but that felt excessive on my new rims.

    No idea about wider nobblies.

  • I ran it a lots lower than you (80kg).

No rocket science, as long it feel smooth, but not squrimy.

Bigger tyres have less risk of pinch puncture, unless you ran it at a silly pressure like 20psi.
