  • I have yet to see a rim damaged by the wrong pad. I have seen some rims damaged by the use of pads that have already been used on alloy rims (there is alloy deposited in the pad material and that scratches the rims).
All pad makers have carbon rim specific pads these days and they are all fine in respect of damage on any carbon rims. There is a warranty issue, true, but that is mainly to get you to buy the wheel makers pads too.
The problem isn't destroying the rim, it is the lack of braking on wet rims, and heat build up on long descents, which can then damage the rims.

  • I wouldn't use non recommended brake pads unless you have a confirmation email from your wheel brand supplier for brake pads replacement-just to cover yourself in case you need to claim a warranty.

That is my professional opinion and that how it works in real life of workshop!

  • Brake pads for generic Chinese carbon rims?
    Generic carbon brake pads?

  • swissstop yellow are the best

  • Wiggle's Lifeline pads are made by Ashima and £4 for 2 pairs

  • I found SwissStop yellow to dreadful, would never use again.

  • Nice, will try some of those for the fixed TT bike - you don't tend to need to brake much on a dual carriageway...

  • people rave about the swissstop black prince

  • ^ this, I have them on my crabon TT wheels. A bit of squeal but now they have bedded in they feel solid. I don't ride them in the wet though so not much help for proper racers.

  • I really like the pads I get with my Chinese carbon rims. Should order more.

Just seem the most predictable braking pads to me.

  • I use these on my legit Easton EC90 .. they are ace. Better than swisstop yellow IMO.

  • I've got black prince evo on mine, they're amazing in the dry, they weren't that good when i got caught in the rain on Saturday though

  • Well Zipp themselves specify other brand brake pads you can use on their rims, so, err.. back to the drawing board?

Other approved pads for Zipp wheels with carbon brake tracks:
Tangente Platinum Pro (first version Tangente pad)
    SwissStop® Black Prince pad
    Bontrager cork pads
    Zipp carbon/carbon pads
    SwissStop® yellow pads

  • Chinese copies, obviously.

They might be full of paper or rocks but they look about right on the outside.

  • Which are also Reynolds pads

  • Anyone know if these Wiggle Lifeline pads will work in Giant SpeedControl brakes on a Propel?

  • Giant SpeedControl brakes

All seem to use standard TRP pad holders

  • Thanks both.
