Proper leather shoes

I'd probably just to do the whole shoes....it shouldn't really soak in too much, just buff afterwards.

^Is it definitely a polish or a creme? Maybe a silly Q but if it was a creme then it will look a couple of shades darker whilst it dries out, in which case you should be fine. If a solid wax based polish then you can remove layers of it with nail varnish remover (and CARE) but you say this is the first clean, so it's doubtful that this is an option.

Personally I'd probably do as 31trum says.

I generally use a neutral creme on my best shoes, I have some of John Lobb's own which seems OK and also some Saphir too.

Shoe people, I have two pairs of shoes to sell as well -

1) NOW SOLD lovely pair of brown Church's Chetwynd brogues, they are just too small for me so although I can't read the writing in them I think they're an 11 (I'm at 12). They have been resoled I would guess relatively recently and are generally in good condition but they are not new and could do with a shine. While photographing them to sell I have noticed that the stitching is beginning to come apart at the mid foot, but I'd probably wear them like that for a while personally. They appear to be £400+ shoes new (?!) but these are probably 25 years old at least. If they fit me I would strip them down and make them shiny again, but they don't. No idea of their value - £50? SOLD

2) Quoddy Chukka Boot with camp sole. Bought as a present, didn't fit, got something else and never got round to sending them back. They're size 7. Now on ebay and not for sale here.

It's not a shine. You'll need a shine afterwards, and Saphir makes some of the best shine too. But that "Renovateur" really is something of a wonder for leather shoes.

It's simply not uniform and too dark. Buy a more neutral color and use more if it next time. It'll go away in due time.

Church's brogues sold but the Chukka's are still available and open to offers.

Brown brogues and laces. Minimal lace? Lots of lace?

Got my favourite pair back from the cobblers this afternoon (re-heel with quarter steel and new over soles) and replaced the laces at the same time. New laces a bit longer than the old ones and I'm struggling with the look.

By the way - not for you Londoners of course - but the traditional cobblers just off Eastgate Street in Gloucester are magnificent. Perfection of a job and £25 including sorting out the stitching on Mrs Beaunidles Bally boots. I rate that as awesome value,

This seems as good a thread to ask as any. I'm looking for black (or dark, don't need to be all black), formal socks (i.e. for wearing with a suit) that are a bit smaller sized. I'm size 7 and find that normal 6-11 ones can be a bit baggy. In other socks you can normally get 6-8.5 but don't seem to get those in this style. Any suggestions?

I really like the Falke Airport socks though I've only had a couple of pairs since summer. Very comfortable mix of wool and cotton, available in 2 size increments (ie 39-40).

These are about 10 years old, the Commando soles on these were fncked, so I tore off the heel then soles, then unpicked the stitching, re-grooved the middle sole so the stitching is flat, re-stictched the welt to middle sole in red.
ordered some Dr.sole wedges, then got a local cobbler to fit and asked for a raw edge on the side for a bit of contrast.

Damn comfy now.

Any recommendations for some nice, leather, hard wearing shoes for narrow feet with arch support? My feet either need insoles with support or a shoe with a equivalent. Shoe shopping is minefield....

just got my first pair of "proper" (read: fucking expensive) leather boots. spent lots of pennies in the hope that these ones won't fall apart. i've got some cobbler's cream from timson lying about. i don't want the boots to look shiny, i just want to make sure i'm taking care of them. is cream the right thing to use?

Once they're broken in they're the most comfortable shoes ever, though - it's worth the initial discomfort...
