In the UK, we have a gas safety law that aims to protect us from
unsafe gas work. It requires anyone carrying out gas work in our homes
or at work to be qualified and registered to do it. Gas engineers must
be on the Gas Safe Register. If they are not, and they work on gas,
they are breaking the law.
Don't try and fix anything yourself. It's illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered to do any non-cosmetic work to a boiler.
