In my bad german, "wieviel kosten du?", rather than "wieviel kosten das?" as I recall :)
The look that I got in return was sometime else entirely...

Yes, that would have raised a few eyebrows.

"Wieviel kostest du?"
"Wieviel kostet das?"

"Kosten" (I'm only spelling it with a capital here as it is at the beginning of the sentence) is either the infinitive, third person plural ("sie kosten"), or polite form ("Sie kosten").

Or the first person plural form ("wir kosten")

Or the end of the word "Nebenkosten" (≈ extra costs)

Or the middle of the made-up word "Seebärkostenabrechnung" (calculating the costs of a sea lion)

Or the middle of the made up word "Feinkostengel" ("fine food angel")

Or the middle of the made-up nonsense word "Bankostentschlüsselung" ("bank east decoding")
