  • the low stack probably explains why people like the TCX moar

  • I'll just get a genesis datum then

  • No mention of head angle, fork rake is meaningless without it.

@amey Datum geometry is pretty spot on with 59mm trail, in between road and CX trail.

  • Your data doesn't even make sense, why the fuck the Giant have a 73mm fork offset?

  • You're right that should be 43mm. The 73 is probably the head angle I think.

  • Datum's going to be next year's slow project with Rival 1 and Spyre flat mount when they are released.

  • Fancy doing the Roubaix on the Datum in 2017?

  • 2016 Rose DX cross comes with:

    Hydro
    Thru axles front and rear
    Flat mount standard
Mounts for mudguards, rear racks & lowrider racks

So on trend. No fancy gravel grinder geo though.

  • Rival 1

    Sounds shit.

  • Gravel grinder geo is marketing bollocks

  • Basically CX geometry with a lower bottom bracket.

  • Yeah, meant more you don't need special geo to ride gravel.

  • I just wrestled an aero road bike up a bloody technical gravel trail in the pissing rain.

    So on trend.

  • More and more thru axles in 2016 bikes make me doubt about my new road disc project fork choices...

I weight about 200 pounds but out of the saddle never had rubbing discs with QR suspension forks, maybe on a road fork would be different? Any experiences with steel/carbon disc forks and heavy weight riders?

  • unlikely

i have two road disc bikes, both with standard QRs and carbon forks. have not had any problems with wheels falling off or forks wobbling around. my weight varies but can approach yours when i have eaten a lot of pie

if you are that worried, just make sure your hubs can be converted to through axle

  • When tightening a road disc QR on a standard fork you should be leaving a white dent in your hand when closing it. Definitely need a bit more of a shove or they start loosening.

  • I think I want to build a super-commuter all-rounder thing.

Kinesis 4S Disc with Ultegra Di2 and disc brakes. How much would this cost me? Better to wait a bit or wait until next year or something? Where can I buy a disc Di2 groupset?!

  • Why Di2 for a commuter? Too much money for a lock-in-the-street bike

  • bottom up;
Starbike (active WW members get 5% extra off)
    About £2.5k
And don't bother building 'all rounder' bike. Such thing doesn't exist. You need a winter bike that can take mudguards (if UK) and a summer bike that can't. Disc brakes are still primitive (think iPhone 3Gs) wait another year.

Or just get a Genesis Datum.

  • Well I've had a Ribble Audax with 105 for the last 4 years that has been my daily commuter, gone on a fully laden 3 week 1100 mile tour around Europe and been used for a whole bunch of long day rides and so forth. It's fine for all the above and has never let me down in a major way. I will say though, that my gears are never quite perfect, the 105 brakes can be scarily bad in the wet, and I fancy something a little bit fancier, but still essentially a do it all workhorse.

At the moment I haven't even got space for two bikes, so my fixed gear is living back at my parents for now. Summer bike as well definitely couldn't happen.

Oh and commutes never end in the street. Bike goes from my hallway to secure building car park, so not too worried about it getting nicked. I just want reliable shifting in all weathers, even when the gears are a bit grimy and the weather is/has been crap.

Edit: Genesis won't work. I'm 6'6" so my frame options are limited. Bike fit led me to discover that I also need a pretty steep seat tube. Only the ribble and 4S do the right size and geo for me, as far as I can tell...

  • 105 5800 and clean your bike / gears / chain...?
