  • Why not use a set of these and a groupset of your choice?
    http://www.tune.de/en/produkt/cranks/big-foot

  • I'm confused by the bb issue, can anyone explain please?

  • It's a unique press- fit design, antecedent of the modern BB/PF30's and so forth:

  • Maybe use a shim and be done with it? Group wise you can always put 11s chainrings on a 'period correct' chain set.
I've dreamt of doing a build like this myself with lowlowlow profile rims.

  • Press fit square taper?! Witchcraft.

  • Ha. Rather you than me. It's a gorgeous frame though so fair play.
Will you get that original toolkit?

  • That method is actually pants, drawing the bearing all the way through the BB shell is going to shorten the life of the shell!
It is actually dead easy with a hammer to remove the bearings and a threaded bolt and suitable sockets to replace. It takes a bit of nerve though!
Having said that I have 1992 Performance which still has the original bearings, and it was my winter and club run bike for many years, they fitted very high quality bearings in the factory.

  • Hmm, one thing I hadn't thought of - am I going to be confounded by JIS/ISO taper shenanigans here, and will have to use a Campag crank?

I know it might be sacrilege to many, but the Phil Wood external BB looks quite tempting right now.

  • It'd be much, much easier (if I replaced the BB) to build this, it'd get a modern group like my Serotta:

  • I going to be confounded by JIS/ISO taper shenanigans here.

You can use any cranks regardless of the taper standard.

  • Am I missing something or isn't the only faff finding a BB and then make sure that it has the spindle length for whichever cranks you decide?

Does it really matter if you end up with a Phil, Token, Shimano, etc. BB and then run whatever cranks you want?

I know it's nice to have matchy - matchy, but a BB?

  • I am sure everyone agrees your Serotta looks super classy. If it is a bike you are going to actually use then surely modern is the way to go? If it is only going to get taken out in the sun for an hour, or looked at hanging on the wall, then go period I reckon.

  • I think I'm about to make Adrian very unhappy.

  • tell me it fits you?

  • sacrilege.

  • This way it'll get a modern groupset, and be used - rather than hanging on a wall for years whilst I slowly accumulate the perfect 7400 group.

  • Definitely the right choice.

  • Those tune cranks sure is pretty

  • Subscribe. I love kleins generally. :)

  • Dura Ace or Sram Red. Needs flashes of silver.

  • I'd go for a black groupset, or dark gray. IMHO those two colours match 99% of the frames better, than silber.
