But looks fugly and isn't designed to specifically work with Macs so has no gesture support (the latter to me when using OS X is pretty much essential).

How useful is gesture support with a mouse (as opposed to trackpad)? I tried one the other day and found it pretty awkward compared to a mouse with wheel/buttons/etc.

That's a fair point, as most of the button is redundant, but then, there aren't many in the first place on a Macintosh mouses.
