Cool, I'd been thinking lasers actually, I'd seen some people saying to use Races on the drive side though
-
• #3828
Don't use Lasers. Use proper double butted spokes or bladed spokes.
-

What is "proper"?
I see cycleclinic also sells Sapim Race.
ACI also does bladed spokes, no experience though. Bladed is a bit harder to build with according to what I read, but I've never done it myself.

DT Swiss Competition, Sapim Race. Lasers are daft weight weenie spokes (which is why my hillclimb wheels are built with them).
I'm of the opinion that anything 32 spoke or above gets proper double butted spokes, anything <20f/24r gets bladed.

If anything, it's easier because you can actually see the wind up, and there's a spoke holding tool to prevent wind up happening anyway

So 28 spokes you flip a coin, bladed or not...?
;)
-
• #3834
28 spoke wheels are an odd one, not as strong as a 32 spoke but without the aero benefits of cutting down to 20/24 spokes. I don't really see the point.
That said I've got 3 28 spoke wheels, all necessitated by either the rims or hubs being what I already had or cheap in 28h.

Same here, great offer on Archetypes on e-bay and I wanted to try them to see if they are great as sliced bread.
Just went from old Ambrosio Balance wheels to Alexrim crostini wheels...and yes, the newer ones are stiffer. 15 years of aluminium technology improvements?
Now for some hubs/spokes and building fun. And then worrying about the black coming off ;)

So maybe CX Rays after all?
I was only avoiding them because they're so expensive.

maybe CX Rays after all?
I was only avoiding them because they're so expensiveIf you think they're too expensive, don't get them. They're good, but very much a marginal gain in performance. If you were concerned about a couple of Watts at 50km.h-1 you wouldn't be using Archetypes.

Now that we are talking spokes, what do you think about ACI ones?
Perhaps a bit silly to put bladed spokes on my 28H rims, but on the other hand, why not...
-
• #3839
These are just training wheels to be honest, I just needed a cheap light-ish wide rim, so maybe I'll use races or DT comps
-
• #3840
what do you think about ACI ones?
I've used the round ones, they're fine. At least one reputable builder thinks they're actually better then DT

Do you have a link for the Archetypes on eBay?
-
• #3843
I checked the seller's page, he doesn't have them anymore :/
Cheapest on e-bay atm is £90-£115 for pairs

Thanks

• #3845
if you are doing your self sapim race.
-
• #3846
that's gonna leave a mark
-
• #3847
Cool thanks, I built my track wheels with races and they went together easy enough

• #3848
I know a bit old school, but would a powertap built on to h-plus son or pacenti sl23 rims be worthwhile? I have a bike where i don't want to change the cranks for a PM and need some clinchers anyway.

Works for me

Some friends decided they must have power... across three bikes, in four set-ups.
I got a G3 off of here and @thecycleclinic stitched it to an Archetype.
Two road bikes and one TT beik, in both training and racing (with a Raltech) form, covered.
Sapim laser is the way of the Cycleclinic, DT swiss has a triplebutted spoke that Tester likes.
ACI spokes are supposed to be good, and cheaper, but if it's not a budget build go with what the wheel builders use. (I used ACI but then sold wheel so no experience with longevity building was fine)
