  • Are you sure?

The effective tt increases with each size.

    edit!

    I re-read your comment. Reach doesn't. Gotcha.

  • The top tube length is meaningless without the headtube, and seat tube angle, as well as bottom bracket drop, fork length, etc.

    edit - you gotcha.

Cannondale recently revamped their SuperSix/CAAD12 sizing to be more consistent in different sizing.

  • Yeah, that's what I was getting at. ^

Miro, I have a cross check, with a spacer stack and a positive rise stem. I don't care. I love the bike so much. But it still annoys me that they do it. Why is the reach on the 52cm, that I ride, 389.7mm? That is so damn long for a 52.

  • 54cm road bike ideally should have around 385mm reach (this is standard with a normal seat tube angle and 54cm top tube).

    A race-fit 54cm road bike is around 395mm reach.

  • Really? My 58cm SuperSix Evo, "race fit", is 399mm reach.

  • the reach on the 54 is longer than the 56!? so confused

  • I would probably says a race-fit 54cm is closer to 390mm than 395mm, as every manufacturer have their own way of making a race fit, it's not easy to narrow it down to a specific sizing.

    • Trek H1 fit (aka race fit), is 400mm, whether the H2 (normal fit) is 391mm.
    • The Felt F-series is @miro_o's friendly at a whopping 412mm reach (with same height as a traditional 56cm bike)
    • Focus Izalco is 405mm (but same height as a traditonal 58cm).

All this base on your size (58cm), Cannondale sizing is in-between race-fit and normal fit generally which I feel is a decent move as you only need to increase or degrease stem length by a centimetre to get the right fit.

  • the reach on the 54 is longer than the 56!? so confused.

Read all about it here, hopefully that should make it easier to understand.

  • Also confusing. And also found Cross-Check reach / HT wack. Dawes Galaxy fits much better for my functional bike.

  • The FBNPNA commuter gets refreshed with a stubby stem and 25's. BEHOLD THE FUNCTIONALITINESS!

  • Generally agreed on the surly geo chat. I love that my cross-check has a horizontal tt just for the looks but the spacer stack for a comfortable long distance position was ridiculous.
Revamping it now as a winter road bike and as such will be looking to drop the stack significantly. It should look a bit less silly!

  • I find the surly geometry to be fine. I have a modest spacer stack, a 90mm stem and a setback post, and my crosscheck fits great.

YMMV of course, but if we're getting into personal preference then I may as well chime in.

In terms of reach changing between sizes, or not, I'm not fully convinced that there's an issue with their approach. They produce a bunch of different frames. The trick is to select one that allows you to create your ideal position, no? So what if the 'sizes' don't increment in a given way - its more relevant to identify a body type/ fit preference that isn't catered for, then check if its actually common in the population.

  • I will concur that many surly builds look quite fugly, but meh, who cares (see thread title)

  • So what if the 'sizes' don't increment in a given way

This. People sizes don't increment in a certain way either.

  • I think surly geo is drawn with spacer stack and positive not as €uro stem which makes them work for 99% of the population.

If you H8 spacer stack get All city.

  • tarts allergic to spacers

    @Mechamorgan

  • I have 35mm of spacers on my road bike an am totally at peace with it

    #spacerzen #spacevana

  • It fit you because it fit you.

The only bike in the Surly line up that's actually quite decent is the Long Haul Trucker.

I see the numbers and it just doesn't add up, like paying £5 for a 500g peanut butter when a 250g one cost £1.50.

Functional should fit a wide range of people, not cause a line up to have near identical sizing with only the stand over height being the main difference.

  • The only bike in the Surly line up that's actually quite decent is the Long Haul Trucker.

Almost did that my next project because of the geo :) the 650b one that I discussed with you.

  • Did a bit of fawning over Mike's 853 Paconi with dynamo and frankendrivetrain (105 octalink triple with 10spd long cage veloce rear mech and 9spd veloce shifters) as he was replacing chain/cassette/jockey wheels in the workshop today.

  • thats making me all hot and bothered

  • What makes you say that about the lht?

  • Because the sizing is actually a little more consistent in the Long Haul/Disc Trucker.

  • Toe overlap on that Paconi looks lethal!

  • Remember this is London Bike Kitchen we're talking about:
