Adaway is very good in terms of also getting rid of ads in apps and so on (although, as you say, it does require your phone to be rooted which I guess could be a hassle).
Installed Marshmallow on Nexus 5 last night. First impressions are good. Seems to be a lot faster/smoother than lollipop. Will have to see how the battery life goes.
Rooting was a bit of a faff. The one-click options like Nexus Root Toolkit don't work, you need to flash a different kernel (and it also didn't seemed a bit of a faff to get a custom recovery on there).
