Got the wheel back from the bike shop, they were way too conservative and didn't want to risk damage. Got home and tapped the axle with a toffee hammer, and the covers and bearings came out just fine. So now it's axle-less until the ebay purchase arrives.
Width of the hub, including fat spacer block on NDS, is roughly 80mm, so that should give me some space to get the wheel centered.
Will update later this week if it does/doesn't work out.
