  • Spontaneous spoke snappage – can this happen? I had a bunch of wheels in storage and I've just pulled out a factory built Easton wheel (from an OTP bike) and 3 spokes on one side have snapped. It's been in storage for a year but I rode on it for 2 years before this with no issues. No real concern as the rim is dead anyway, just strange! Glad it din't happen when I put it on the bike.

  • Rear, Drive side? Had 2 go like that on EA50 replaced both & some corroded nipples it has ridden fine since so far.

  • Front wheel, radial lacing. Close inspection did show corrosion of nipples and spokes. I suppose sea air is hard to keep out.

    Yes, but aluminum nipples are easy to avoid, and you probably should :)

  • I have some ideas, but what rim would people here recommend for a build with these parameters?

    I struggled to think of anything; there are plenty of disc brake rims which would work, but the only rim brake options I've come up with so far in that drilling which I'd consider wide enough for 35mm tyres are the new Velocity Quill and the equally expensive Hed Belgium+

  • Thanks tester, I looked at the Quill and liked it till the sticker shock...
    Haven't seen the Hed Belgium+, will look and gasp at that as well.

  • Archetype come in 28H, and they seem to accept 35mm tires.
    I don't know if it gives you the profile you want with 35mm though.

    Thecycleclinic on here builds with them, maybe he knows? :)

  • I run Archetypes with 35mm tyres. It's alright.

    Something has to keep the inflation rate up while most other manufactured goods are getting cheaper and cheaper in real terms :-) Making rims hasn't really changed in over 50 years, so it's no surprise that they're not getting cheaper.

  • Still a bit steep considering the whim that this potential project is based on.
    The Razor (14mm interior) with a 32mm Pasela doesn't actually look and ride too bad, so a rim with an 18mm interior width and a 35mm tire might be an improvement, yeah?
    I'm leaning toward the cheap side with the R460 at the moment.

  • The new pacenti sl23 has a 20.2mm internal width so is just right for big tyres. The archetype will be fine but it is narrower. The quill looks good but as it not available in the u.k yet it is rather moot. Besides velocity rims are a bit of a mixed bag. Of all the rim brands the one with the most rejects from me has been velocity. Some of the ailerons this year have just not been round and have big bumps or worse a bump that shows on the side.

    As for back low cost hubs in 20f 24f drilling look no further than miche primato.Very reliable 435g for the pair and they come with 11 speed bodies. The problem is you won't find them from the usual sources as in these drillings they are available from miche only oem at least that how I get them for wheel building. Chickens cycles only sells same drilling pairs but has 24f 24r pairs in a few weeks as they are out again.

  • New tablet does not have all the rims names in it yet. This is the third one this year. Getting ready to through modern tech in the skip as it not a help really.

  • Carbon rims, any special considerations when building? Nipple washers to spread the load a little a la Zipp a waste of time?

  • I use nipple washers, but many build without.

  • It depends on the spoke nipped bed thickness whether nipped washer are needed or not. Very light rims might benefit but you the rims should not need them if they are properly made. I have not used nipped washers yet. Rim cracking has so far been limited to a couple of old v1 pacenti sl23 and one carbon rim after the rider crashed badly. I really don't see the point in wasting time with them. The two failures with the pacenti rims I think we're down to spoke tension being at the limit of 1200N rather than 1150N ds rear which is were I decided the practical limit was quite quickly. Spoke tension is key to avoiding rim cracking as is spoke count being appropriate for the rider weight.

  • Isn't the point of washers in carbon rims down to providing a harder surface to the thrust bearing while turning the nipple, rather than load spreading in service? Plastic isn't very hard, so the nipples tend to auger into the rim as you turn them.

  • Is it true that Open Pro got markedly worse?

    I'd says they're simply behind with the time.

  • I have some Archetypes and a pair of Hope RS Mono hubs I need to build up

    Can anyone recommend some spokes? I'm planning 20H Front Radial / 24H Rear 2 cross.
