You know what I think (do it! do it!) but I wouldn't go for that XJS. £4-6k can buy you one of a similar age which has been well looked after and not messed about with. I personally really like the 88/89ish cars but the X-JS (pre-HE) has the best future classic potential and are faster (and the nicest wheels) but use EVEN MORE fuel and lack some of the 'refinements' of later models.
I do think one big advantage of a car like an XJS is that ideally you would garage it to keep it dry, but you can keep it on the street because most scrotes don't have the foggiest what it is.
