Yeah, its a button that isn't a button. You rest your finger on the edge and then sort of squeeze, rather than press.
I use it when I am holding the kindle one handed or when my thumb falls naturally on the edge. If you need to stab at it like a button it doesn't work well, but in that instance you can touch the screen to page turn instead.
It's great.
